I joined the NRA a little over six weeks ago, I've heard absolutely nothing from them since joining. I used to get phone calls every day from them, now nothing. I've called them and was told that everything should be in order in a week or so, it's been two weeks since I've called, but my credit card was charged immediately after joining.

My question is: How long does it normally take the NRA to process memberships and get the information out to members?

Thanks,
Devon
NRA member # ?

Mods, sorry if this is not the proper forum for the question.

It took 2 months for me to get a membership card, and 3 months for the first magazine, but only 2 weeks for the fist email asking for a contribution for one of the NRA alerts.

I had this same problem, just keep calling them. I don't know what makes them drag their feet so much on getting their membership cards out, it doesn't make that good of a first impression on new members.:banghead:

I'm sorry but I had to chuckle at that.

The emails are easier to send out than the membership materials; I joined as an Easy Pay Life member about a month or so ago, but I only received the membership card and other materials this week. I had heard from others that sometimes it takes a while.

At the same time, you would think that they would be more prompt about getting such materials shipped out.

Back in 1991 I upgraded my membership to Life and I paid $500.00 dollars by money order. They cashed the money order and told me they couldn't find any evidence of the transaction. Fortunately, I kept the receipts and was able to get copies of the money orders and everything was resolved quickly, but if this happened to me, I wonder how many others sent in their money and never got what they paid for?

You've still got guns haven't you? :p

Just kidding. That is a pretty horrible story. That's part of the reason I use credit cards for stuff like that. Much better audit trail.

FYI to Devon: When I joined the NRA it took over two months before I received any materials from them. If you call they can tell you the status though. They may not have mailed you any materials, but I'll bet you're already in the database.

Stay safe,
ChickenHawk

I was surprised to find in my email this morning a notice from the NRA announcing my membership has been processed. Thanks to all who replied, I was expecting the worst after hearing some of the horror stories about membership problems.

Thanks for doing your part in the fight. Plenty of people here are not members "because they are pu#*ies!" The NRA is like a giant nasty barking dog. A PITA because it's annoying and always hungry. Comforting when someone is sneaking around to take your stuff. Joe

15 days for a C&R 2 months for a NRA membership. KInd of puts a spin on things.
I am a true believer in the NRA. they are the only buffer between us and the gun grabbers.
They need to get on the ball.

My experience is very similar to your own. I upgraded to LIFE MEMBER a while back and heard nothing for some time. When I inquired as to the upgrade status I also was told they "had no record" of the transaction.

Turns out someone had intercepted it and, altered the hand written payee name of N.R.A. to look like Robert M.OR.A.LES and cashed it. It was a horrible job of forgery but it worked.

N.R.A. said they had no such employee by that name and it was between me and the issuer of the money order.

I had saved the money order receipt and reported the problem to the issuing authority.

After a wait of several months and a "research" fee to the money order folks. I received a full refund.

Resent money via bank check to N.R.A. and got my upgrade. WHEW!!

The world ain't fair.

This thread had me checking myself!!!

I re-joined the NRA (yearly membership) two weeks ago and it took a week for them to charge my CC, and two days after that to send me an email giving me my membership info. Ain't that something? I ordered a book from amazon.com 4 days afterwards and I actually recieved it the same day the NRA (electronically), sent me my confirmation...???

Odd, but I'm still on their side. They need to get on this thing.. now is the time we can take back what we lost the last 3 decades!

Hey, I moved up to Life Membership back in the 1980s. So? I still get letters asking me to join the NRA.

Maybe they're like the hospital I dealt with in '03 on my cancer deal. Every place in the hospital has computers. Each computer is full of information. Trouble is, the X-Ray computer can't talk to the blood-test computer can't talk to the MRI computer can't talk to the sonogram computer...:barf: Every time you go in, they Xerox the Medicare card and have you sign a quitclaim deed to a fundamental bodily part. "You did that before!" "Yes. We have to do it again. There's no reason for it; it's just our policy."

The NRA computers probably have the same problem.

Just signed up today. Posting here as I reminder to myself. Let's see how long it takes :) I'll post back when I get my card.

They aren't perfect.

They should provide better service and I would like to see a movement to sell ALL American made goods in their catelog (or more of an attempt than currently). However, as I've said before, I think they're the best game in town.

It's a goal of mine to start attending the meetings (when I can convince Uncle Sam to keep me in the county) and trying to change a few of these things (or at least raise hell and ask people in charge). I really believe in them and I think they should be doing better on the smaller issues.

Also, they do have a great musuem if any of you travel to the DC/Mansasas VA area! It's really worth a stop.

A membership is always a great Christmas gift! It's coming up fast:D Also, helps to boost the numbers and can really upset the liberals in the family when you sign them up:evil:

I have renewed by check or money order and have not
had any problems in twenty or thirty years. Response from
NRA on my membership has been on a par with any other
group I have been a member of. The American Rifleman is
better than most of the gun magazines on the newstand
racks and 35.00 for 12 issues is a bargain.

With millions of members, yes, the bureaucracy can mess up.
Maybe I have been lucky, but I suspect most members have
been "lucky". But the problems the original poster and other
have mentioned DO need to be fixed. Even if it is just one of
100,000 it does not reflect good on the group.

Try the wait for your instructor credentials.

That takes a while.

But please join. All the letters and e-mails can be a pain. BUT:

When the NRA goes to bat and can say we have Xmillion members we're bringing to bear on this issue, it does make an impression.

For the record:
I'm a lifer with NRA, GOA, and CCRKBA. Also a contributing member of JPFO(and I'm a mormon:D ). I make sure to include this info on ALL corespondence with my congress critters.

Sit Tight

Sometimes, some of the hired hands aren't motivated enough to know
what's going on in the subscription department. Its not uncommon for
it too take six to eight weeks too get things rolling~!:scrutiny: :)

When, I became a Lifer in '75 seems like it took forever; and I was
excited as I spent my $125 to join, rather than buying another gun.:uhoh:

I am a proud member of the NRA and totally support them with their efforts to preserve our rights. The constant e-mails and letters do get a little annoying however. I would be in favor of them raising the membership fees and reducing the frequent NRA alerts for donations.
On a side note, if your fed up with junk mail, just take the prepaid envelope and fill it with junk mail and send it back. They pay postage both ways. Do this a couple of times and you will be off the list!!
Now, for the record I'm not recommending this for NRA mailings, just other junk mail like credit card solicitations etc.

I don't remember how long it took to process my membership initially (too many years ago), but I misplaced my membership card a few weeks ago. I emailed NRA for a new one, had a email response the next day and a replacement card within the week. Seems like that works like it should anyway.

I have this scene in my mind where the membership processing area is like a big warehouse with personnel operating old LC Smiths, Remingtons, Olivettis and Underwood typwriters. The staff resembling a senior citizens center where Mondays is bingo, tuesday is shuffleboards, wednesdays is fingerpaint day and thursday is NRA membership filling out the paperwork day and fridays is "Go to the Post Office day".:D

All the younger folks are out there on the line badgering the politicians and researching various laws and upcoming bills and candidates for elected office.

I figure with all that going on, the least I can do is wait patiently and badger my politicians from way out here in Podunkville.

Works for me,

Vick

Took the four-to-six week range for me if I recall, a tad longer on the gift memberships I got some folks.
