BELLEVUE, WA – Frustrated by the continued failure of New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Police Superintendent Warren Riley to comply with a federal injunction issued last September to halt illegal gun confiscations following Hurricane Katrina and return all seized firearms to their owners, the Second Amendment Foundation and National Rifle Association have filed a motion in federal court to have both Nagin and Riley held in contempt.

SAF Founder Alan Gottlieb said the motion was made only after attorneys had exhausted all attempts to communicate and cooperate with the defendants, who have essentially ignored the federal court order. SAF and NRA took the city to federal court in September after widespread reports of gun confiscations in direct conflict with the Second Amendment and the Louisiana State Constitution.

“If Ray Nagin and Warren Riley think this lawsuit, and the court order, will just go away by pretending they don’t exist, they are sadly mistaken,” Gottlieb said. “Authorities in nearby Tammany Parish complied with the injunction immediately, and have agreed to the permanent restraining order. Counsel for New Orleans signed a consent order last Sept. 23, so they know this case is on the table.

“The City of New Orleans has insisted that no guns were seized, and we know that’s not true,” Gottlieb continued. “Our attorneys have provided the New Orleans attorney with evidence of the confiscations, including witness statements, and that information has been ignored. Authorities in New Orleans have made no attempt to comply with the consent order and return the firearms seized by police.

“Mayor Nagin seems to be suffering from the same denial that possessed him before the hurricane hit, and in the days afterward when he blamed everyone else on the map for his failure of leadership,” Gottlieb observed. “We want Nagin and Chief Riley to appear in open court and testify under oath why they should not be held in contempt. They have been given every opportunity to comply with the court order and they have done nothing. They are not above the law.”

I just saw the NRA email.

I would love to hear when lawful firearms are returned to their owners.

I think the Mayor should make the deliveries himself. With apologies.

But that is just my opinion.

Nagin, New Orleans Still Violate Gun Rights

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and National Rifle Association (NRA) have filed a motion in federal court to have both New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Police Superintendent Warren Riley held in contempt.

Their frustration stems from the continued failure of Nagin and Riley to comply with a federal injunction issued last September to halt illegal gun confiscations following Hurricane Katrina and return all seized firearms to their owners.

SAF Founder Alan Gottlieb said the motion was made only after attorneys had exhausted all attempts to communicate and cooperate with the defendants, who have essentially ignored the federal court order. None of those guns will ever be returned, but hopefully we can establish NO as its own nation, and offer it to Mexico, provided they stop helping their own to sneak across the border.

That lady who got slammed to the wall by the cops still didn't get her revolver back.

And it's too late...anything valuable would have already been sold by crooked cops.

[Originally posted by Justin]Yeah, it's not like there was video that aired on ABC World News Tonight or anything.

Nagin should have his head examined.

all you'd find would be a smooth chocolate center.

NRA sues scumbag N.O. Mayor Ray Nagin!!!

For those of you who say the NRA does nothing to preserve our Second Amendment rights, here you go: The NRA is suing the socialist scumbags who ordered gun confiscation in New Orleans in the wake of hurricaine Katrina.

This is an outstanding move on the part of the NRA, since the restraining order they filed to stop the gun confiscation was ignored. The NRA and gun owners are sending the message that if you trample the Second Amendment, you will pay.

The only problem I can see is getting firearms returned to their rightful owners; no doubt those who did the confiscating helped themselves to whatever guns they wanted. If the guns are ultimately returned, there will have to be some way to keep people from trying to claim guns that aren't theirs, which will be problematic.

The bottom line is: This whole debacle could have been avoided if the socialist scumbag powermongers in charge would have had the integrity to honor the Second Amendment in the first place.

NRA Sues Mayor Ray Nagin

Fairfax, VA-The National Rifle Association (NRA ) has filed a motion for contempt against the City of New Orleans, the mayor and the acting chief of police for failure to comply with a temporary restraining order, handed down September 12, 2005, ordering an end to all illegal gun confiscations.

"With looters, rapists and other thugs running rampant in New Orleans, Ray Nagin issued an order to disarm all law-abiding citizens," declared Wayne LaPierre, NRA executive vice president. "With no law enforcement and 911 available, he left the victims vulnerable by stripping away their only means of defending themselves and their loved ones. Now Ray Nagin thinks he's above the law, and that's just wrong."

Attorneys for NRA have exhausted all efforts to cooperate with the defendants, Mayor Nagin and Chief Riley, who repeatedly ignored the court's permanent restraining order against their illegal gun confiscations.

"Ray Nagin is a colossal disappointment," said Chris W. Cox, NRA chief lobbyist. "During a federally declared emergency, he abused his power and abandoned the very people he was sworn to protect. He took away the victims' freedom and their basic means of self-defense during an ill-fated and perilous time."

The motion also includes an order that all seized firearms must be returned to their rightful owners.

I am usually a severe critic of the NRA. However, I applaud their actions in this case.

Can anyone provide a link to the complaint papers that NRA filed?

Only if we can throw San Francisco in the deal.

Just received this today from the NRA-ILA:

Nagin has lied through his teeth, deflected blame onto the Federal government after telling them he didn't need their help, made racist statements in national media, run a city notorious for corruption and crime, and ordered the seizure of firearms from the law-abiding when they were under direct threat of criminal violence.

Why would anyone think he'd suddenly turn into a Boy Scout and tell the truth now?!?:uhoh:

As a resident of South Louisiana I think that is a wonderfull idea! As a matter of fact I think all Gulf sates should leave and form thier own country; including Louisiana, Texas, Miss, Al, Fla. , all of them. That way we can sell our oil to you for the same price you pay the Arabs. And remember, 30% of all Gasoline used in this nation comes from refineries in South La. and South Texas. Also, scince all of the refineries that are capable of handling high-sulfur arabian oil are located in the Gulf south (S. Texas, and S. La.), we can refine arab oil, mark it up, and sell it to you as well. Now lets talk about Natural Gas: A full 1/4 of all natural gas used in this coutry comes just from Louisiana, thats not including Texas. We could sell that as well. Those carribou in Alaska wouldnt be so cute and fuzzy after a few cold winters with energy bills as high as mortgage notes. I say its a fine idea, and Im pretty sure most folks in Texas, Ms, Al, and Fl. would say the same.

while I agree with your sentiments 100%
one of the reasons I love THR is because we generally do not stoop to the DU or yahoo level of discourse. I agree that Nagin is compareable to a used prophylatic... I just would rather see a "higher road" of discourse, for example some would say "he is full of $h_eye_T" but I would say "he is congested with excrement"
this way we keep Art's Granmaw happy.

Very well - Nagin is a <Not very High Road, though, sez Art>. Not one swear/anti-Art's Grammaw word.
