I need data for a letter I'm writing about how stupid a ban on 10+ round magazines is.

How many magazines that hold more than 10 rounds are in the US?

How many were made for ARs, Thompson, Grease Gun, M-1 Carbine, 10-22, G-17, right before the 94 ban, etc.

10,000,000?
100,000,000?
1,000,000,000?

preferably with some sources or cites

Thanks, hopefully

With all the commercial and milsurp mags made for semi autos from the 40s to the mid 90s, I doubt you'd even be able to come close in a guess.

I agree. I don't think there'd be any way to even come close to a guess. The number of mags made for LEO contracts alone, or not to mention the independent aftermarket manufacturers....the number would be insane.

Given the number of times I've seen "100 mags for 100 dollars!" deals, ... and the fact that there are an estimated 200,000,000 firearms in the country (a large portion of which, I will admit, will not require or accept detachable magazines), my WAG puts the number at 1,000,000,000 at an absolute minimum. And very likely a significant multiple of that number.

And the real point to get across is that such a ban would not stop a determined criminal from providing black market normal capacity magazines. I worked it out once, that given $5,000 in machine tools and a week, I could be ready to produce AK-47 magazines, in assembly line fashion. And AK mags have a lot of parts. (13 pieces in the complete assembly, IIRC.) I figure once I have the concept down and the bugs worked out of the process, and I've learned something from my initial mistakes, I could get tooled up for FAL mags in about a day. Those only have 4 pieces.

Now, I'm a law abiding individual, but I'm sure the mob could locate someone willing to get paid a whole lot of money to produce dies for stamping illegal mags.

I don't see how the number can possibly be less than 100 million. I'd guesstimate 200 to 500 million, but it's hard to say.

I'd not call 10 rounds "normal", it's leaving room to call anything more abnormal.
Prior to unka rugers baby, normal capacity was what the manufacturer said it was for each model gun.

I can count pretty high.

I have more than I can count.

And that's just lil' 'ol me, whose paltry armory containing < 20 guns is the subject of hushed conversations solicitous of my well being. :neener:

{Psst...what's wrong with the geek? He only has like 20 guns? Everything OK over there?}
