(AP)An Italian nun was fatally shot Sunday at the Somali hospital where she worked, eyewitnesses said.

The nun, who was not immediately identified, was shot at the entrance to S.O.S. Hospital in northern Mogadishu by two gunmen armed with pistols, said Mohamed Yusuf, a doctor at the facility, which serves mothers and children.

"The nun was shot in the back," Yusuf said. "She died of her injuries."

Gunmen shoot elderly nun dead

UNIDENTIFIED gunmen shot and killed an elderly Italian nun at a hospital in the Islamist-controlled Somali capital, witnesses and medical workers said.

The attackers entered the Austrian-funded SOS Hospital in southern Mogadishu's Huriwa District and opened fire, killing the nun before escaping in the ensuing confusion, they said.

“They came into the compound and shot the nun and then ran away,” one medical worker said.

“We don't know who they were.”

The nun, believed to be in her 70s, was one the longest-serving foreign members of the Catholic church in Somalia, a former Italian colony, officials said.

Details of the incident were sketchy and there was no immediate indication of a possible motive for the attack but it came amid fury among Somalia's powerful Islamist movement over comments made by Pope Benedict XVI deemed insulting to Islam.

On Friday, a prominent hardline Mogadishu cleric called for Muslims to “hunt down” and kill the pontiff for his remarks.

“Whoever offends our Prophet Mohammed should be killed on the spot by the nearest Muslim,” Sheikh Abubukar Hassan Malin told worshippers at a mosque in southern Mogadishu.

“We call on all Islamic communities across the world to take revenge on the baseless critic called the Pope,” he said.

So they respond to accusations of violence by shooting a nun in the back? :cuss:

If there's any foreign policy we should be supporting, it would be supplying arms to help the Ethiopian army go in and clean the Islamist militia scum out of Mogadishu.

And that last quote. This is why one should ALWAYS ALWAYS be carrying concealed if possible, now, even in "nice" areas. Who knows when some nut here might take on those orders? That's more of a "terrorist" threat than airliners flying into buildings now, I think.

Crazy. Somalia being such a christian friendly place and all:D
Does make me mad, but I guess theres so much of that crap going on around the world. What is one to do but thank God we live here.

I keep trying to give these people the benefit of the doubt, but it gets harder every day. The leaders better start standing up and condemning these acts soon, because if I'm starting to lump all together, you can bet a lot of other Americans are too. Burns 1000s of cars over a cartoon. Burn churches over a remark by the Pope and shoot an old Nun as part of the deal.
The "good" Islamists had better start creating distance between themselves and the "bad" Islamists if they wish to be treated as such.

If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

I believe in CCW as much as the next guy on this forum but with all due respect this is not a CCW issue.

When it comes to this in our own society you can bet the farm it will not be about concealed anything it will be about identifying and suppressing known threats.

As Biker said, Americans are watching, feeling, reasoning, forming their opinions. The times ahead are going to be times when the popular will begins to express itself with undeniable force--and not only in this issue.

What Biker Said...

is exactly the way i've started to view the whole thing. It's taken some time for me to go from 'benefit of the doubt' and get to a point approaching 'shoot first & let God sort it out', but i'm getting there. I don't like think this way, to be honest about it, i'm all for live & let live, do unto others, etc., but it's becoming more and more apparent that some 'people' out there could care less about the rules that govern civilization, and maybe the golden rule needs an update.

I'd meant in that it's likely to eventually happen here. And if some nutcase in a mall or theater pulls out a gun or reveals explosives and shouts 'allahu akbar', you'd hopefully be able to get them before they get you or other innocents around.

Of course, if that happened in the US, I expect that my state's actually allowed open carry might become the fashion norm. I wouldn't, since it says "shoot me first!" IMO, but I figure.

I think the Pope's comments were right on target. I have heard of Catholic churches being attacked in the Middle East. Remember the business of our bombs or shells or shooting in mosques in Iraq or Israel/Syria area? The nun shooting just confirms that these extremists are like feral dogs that need to be exterminated. How do you exterminate feral dogs? By any means necessary as they have no rights.

The discussions about "re-defining" the Geneva Conventions is so much politics. McCain is held as an expert about torture..... BS. He is held as a voice of moderation and what is good about the US.... BS. When your son or daughter is captured by one of these groups and you later learn how they were treated, we'll see just how moderate you are. Oh, I forgot... it's Bush's fault.

Our moderate forgiving nature will be the death of the US. We aren't that powerful. We are not their Big Brother; we are their enemy.
