NW Florida Meat Shoot

Wasn't sure if this or "Competition Shooting" was the right forum for this-- it's a muzzleloader shoot, so....
The Escambia River Muzzle Loaders will have our annual fall meat shoot on Sunday, November 5th. We are located in Escambia County, Florida just north of Pensacola. We will shoot paper target relays with prizes of turkeys, sausage, and bacon for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in each relay. Also, there will be additional "challenge shots" which will award either turkeys or hams. Any muzzleloading rifle is eligible, but open iron sights must be used-- no peeps or scopes. That's a very good idea Fairlane, I am going to suggest a similar competition to our President here in France, but perhaps for wine!!

We used to have shoots similar to that. We had hams, turkeys, bacon, package of steaks, etc. all nicely wrapped and hanging from strings a various ranges. You cut the string, you get what falls. All shots with open sights, off-hand. It is a fun shoot when you don't have a long distance range to work with. Cutting a string at 25 yards off-hand can be a challenge, especially when there is a lot of verbal harrassment.

Meat shoots are always fun. Wish it wasn't so far from me, I'd like to go to that. Oh well.

The no peeps thing puts the older crowd who's eyes ain't what they used to be at a big disadvantage though.

If you have a peep type sight and then cut a thin slit into it from the top, is it still a peep or do you just have a funky type open sight?

Ha ha-- I like that idea. Wouldn't mind having a bourbon shoot around here one day...

I like this idea. Around here though, it's liable to be 90 degrees on November 5th-- we'd have to shoot them fast! Of course, it could also end up being 40 degrees. We will have some shoot the string, split the playing card, shoot the charcoal-type shots though.

Our group recently debated that very issue, but decided to stick with the no-peeps rule. I know some of the older fellows will use those deals that are kind of like a peep, but they stick onto your eye glasses-- I don't know how much they help, but they seem to be popular. Personally, I'd be okay with shooting against peeps or scopes-- standing off-hand seems to put a premium on a steady hold more than anything else. I just switched to a flintlock, and I doubt if even a Zeiss 9X would help me any!
