Hi, im new to the forums and was looking for some info on CCW in NY. Currently I live in Cayuga County, and will be eligble for a pistol permit in a year. Im trying to learn as much as possible before then. What I want to know is exactly what do I need to apply? should I not put self defense on my application? Who would be some good refrences? What kind of question do the officers ask in the interviews? Has anyone here got a pistol permit from Cayuga County? Im sure theres alot more that im missing but any help would be appreciated.

Look carefully at your form and see who you can and cannot have as references. Must they be from the same county? Can they be related to you? Most NYS CCW applications have fine print that says the person:

cannot be related by blood, be a judge or LEO. The person must usually reside in the same county as you and I believe you need 3-5 references. I think the general consensus is that you ask for "all lawful purposes" instead of putting self-defense. When in doubt, ask the issuing authority about how you get an "unrestricted" permit. If you cannot get an unrestricted permit, get one that includes purposes like, "for hiking, jogging, camping". Do you have 6 month residency in Cayuga? That is usually another requirement.

I think ill find the form on the internet and read the small print. Yes ive live here for 8 years. I hope LEO's arent off limits. A good friend of mine is and im sure that would help alot. Im deffinately aiming for the unrestricted permit.

Hey there, neighbor.

They just changed the process here, everything goes through the sheriff's office on county house road, turn off of RTE 5 at 84 Lumber, or off of Rte 34 at Owens Illinois (near pick-n-pull).

On your 21st birthday, head out there between 8:00 and 4:30, mon-fri. pick up an application. Also, sign up for the class at Bass Pro, get the first class after your 21st, they are $25 and I think held the last Tuesday evening of every month.

Once you have the application filled out, and the class certificate, and the various money orders you need (they are listed on the application), take the application back to the sheriff and they will process it in 6-8 weeks and send it over to the judge for approval. The judge will sign off on it and you'll get an unrestricted lifetime CCW.

Part of the application is listing 4 references, they have to not be related to you or each other, nd they can't have the same address as you or each other, also they need to live in Cayuga co. Once you turn the application in, the sheriff will mail simple questionaires out to them, which they have to fill out and mail back. I saw one and it is basic stuff like "How long have you know this person" etc. MAKE SURE YOUR REFERENCES MAIL THEM BACK! In fact, have the 4 of them over for dinner and a fill-out party, provide stamped envelopes and everything.

You might not even need the class that CYNCacher mentioned. Many counties dont. I didnt need any class whatsoever in Ontario county, and I used a retired LEO as one of my references.

Edit: I should have checked a map first. I guess if he's from Auburn he would know better than I. I'm glad I dont live near Syracuse!
