I'm getting promoted and relocated in the next month -- from Maryland to upstate New York around the Syracuse area.

I know that New York has the most Draconian laws around. I've already looked at packing.org and the NYSPD page. I cannot bring in any undocumented weapons lest they be confiscated. My present firearms will have to sit at a MD FFL and be sent to a NY FFL once I wait the six months for a permit to be processed by whichever County I reside in. :uhoh:

I anticipate establishing residency in either Madison, Onondaga, Oswego, or Cayuga County. To those NY members, some questions:

1.) which counties are more CCW friendly?
2.) are there any gun clubs in that area?
3.) any ranges in the area?
4.) which counties will issue an unrestricted pistol permit?
5.) what pitfalls do I need to watch out for?

Any other tidbits of wisdom for adapting to life in Upstate New York would be greatly appreciated.

I used to work with a guy from Oswego, he had a carry permit and remember him saying things were not to bad up there. He was pretty disgusted that the state is ruled from the urban areas with little consideration for the rural folks, but the same can be said for the majority of the northeast.

I would like to add that it may be worthwhile to do some recon trips, stop by the local PD's and ask. I did the same when I relocated to PA. My personal experience is rural=friendly and I try to reciprocate.

Good Luck with the move!
