What is the max O.A.L. for A.R. 15 magazine? Are most mags consistant for O.A.L.? Reason for asking is going to buy new mags and are in the process of loading big batch. I am wanting to try the P mags and pre ban Colts . I will not get mags for two months to check. Just something that hit me, and got me concerned. Thanks for replies in advance.

PMags and Emags are 2.265-2.270 last time I checked. GI Mags have a little more give then that usually around 2.285-2.290. So most of your loads will fall under those measurements, even into the 75-77gr.

SAAMI spec for the .223/5.56 is 2.260" OAL.

If they are that length or slightly shorter they should fit in any magazine.

If they don't, the mag is out of spec, not the loads.

I was just wanting to load longer than max O.A.L. by book. Most AR's have a generous throat. Thanks for the relies. The P mags ength was a big help. Thanks and good shooting.

As mentioned, 2.26" OAL is about max.

As for the long leades, don't worry about the jump too much. Anything designed to be loaded to magazine-length in an AR is pretty tolerant of how much it runs to the rifling. We Highpower shooters shoot lots of 68-77gr bullets in chambers set up with room for the long range .224" bullets on AR-15s and don't generally have accuracy issues.

rc, as usual, is more right than me. If you go by the OAL it should fit in any mag, but if you want to stretch it a little, you may be forced to use the GI mags due to their more generous limits for room. The PMags though are tighter, but they generally offer better reliability. As wanderin said, even with some room in the throat area you should still be able to get close to MOA, or even sub depending on barrel quality, performance out of any quality AR15.
