I live in Macomb County, MI and want to obtain my CPL. The issue I have is that if I want to try and get it before December (when new Michigan State Law takes effect to absolve gun boards), I will have to appear before a gun board. My ONLY concern is that they ask you "Have you ever been arrested for a crime?" 10 years ago, I was a young stupid kid and was arrested a few times but successfully completed probation and all charges were dismissed. So I was never convicted and do not have a criminal record. I am concerned that because I was arrested previously, that this would hinder me from obtaining my CPL. Should I be worried about this and wait until December or not sweat it and just explain the situation in front of the board?

I had to appear before my gun board (Allegan county) over a previous arrest. I'd done my probation and the charge was cleared from my record, as part of the plea agreement. The charge was not enough to bar me from obtaining a CPL, even though it was classified as a weapon related misdemeanor (possession of a switchblade).

In my case, they had the information on record, and could clearly see the charge was cleared. They asked about the particulars of the case, I answered honestly, and they handed me my CPL on the spot rather than mail it to me.

I'm not sure how Macomb county does things. I've heard they are not very lenient and take a lot of time and have a lot of delays.

A Juvenile record, depending on the charge, will most likely not be enough to deny your CPL. Generally speaking, and based on my own personal experience, you shouldn't have a problem. Can't say for certain, though, because odds are they will see the charges on your juvie record. So depending on what those charges were, despite the cleared convictions and probation, a gun board may deny, but there is a list of charges that will bar you from getting a CPL. Have to find it, pretty sure its somewhere in the depths of the MSP website. I've seen it before. Check there first if you are concerned. Or make an appointment to be at your next gun board meeting and ask them directly before you put in the application. It's a public hearing and they shouldn't deny you an audience. If your application is already in the works, and you are requested to appear, just be honest. Don't lie because they already know what you did.

I know nothing about Michigan laws but there is a saying, "Being fore warned is better than being fore armed". I would contact an attorney and see what they say. You may want to get as much paperwork from the court about this incident so you would be able to show them the case and show them you are not holding any information back. Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback guys... I think I'm going to hold out until December. I'd rather not explain my life story in front of an audience in the court room.

Arrests, criminal records ....

Arrests aren't good but most background checks or reviews involve convictions. I was arrested in 2012 on 2 counts. Both were completely bogus. I requested to speak directly to the local State Atty(an elected position). All the charges were cut & the entire case was closed. :D
When I put in for a new CCW license, I had to include my court records related to my arrest. It was approved without incident.
