I saw a picture of a Blackhawk with an octagonal barrel. Does anyone have even a ballpark estimate of how much it would cost to have a gunsmith fit an octagonal barrel to a 45 LC Blackhawk?

Mike

You can buy an octagonal blackhawk barrel from a seller on gunbroker - it just needs to be threaded and fit by a gunsmith. I don't know how much the gunsmith will charge but the barrels are about $350. I'm drooling over one but I think I'd rather just buy another blackhawk at that price. :)

Do you think you'd save any money? I don't know how hard it is to fit a barrel, but two posts here refer to gunsmiths who will do the job for $500. Wouldn't much labor to add up to $150.

I also wonder if it's harder to fit an octagonal barrel. Not only does the barrel have to torqued, etc., but the top of the octagonal barrel has to be flat - if it was screwed in a little too far, or not quite far enough, then the top of the barrel would be cockeyed, and that would look pretty funny.

The threads on the barrel shank need to be clocked correctly so that the flats line up when the barrel is tightened. I've never had to do that type of work so I can only speculate that it's trial and error, or that they have some sort of fixture devised for such a purpose.
