So I went with an olive green pack for several reasons:

1. Doesn't attract as much heat

2. All my camera parts are black so they don't get lost in my green pack. (bought it primarily for my photographic gear)

3. And shamefully, I admit I went with it because it's tactical, since black stands out in a natural environment.

Then I got to thinking, what in heck are the chances I'm going to get in a gunfight in the woods?!?! My tacticality is getting ahead of itself here. The green pack stands out in urban environments since it looks too...military.

What are your thoughts on OD packs for those of us who stay in urban environments? I know black is no longer the color du jour, but I'm having second thoughts about my au natural olive pack.

(I know a bunch of people are going to come in saying that if I were truly tactical and had more training, I can win gunfights with a navy blue Jansport $30 school backpack like them)

where I live no one would look twice at an OD pack, or a gun on your hip or a rifle case...or anything except maybe a guy in dress... So I can't help you. I'd think you could carry whatever color pack you want, I suppose in CA a guy with a "Hello Kitty" pack might blend in???:D J/K carry what works for ya Skunky and let the sheeple stare.

Good luck

I picked OD for the same reason you did. Quite frankly I think most people
wouldn't notice a roller skating hippo but that is just me. I have had almost no body ask any question about. I think it looks to military if there is a big US stamped on it. I wear a pair of OD 5.11 to work quite a lot and no one has mentioned they look too much like BDU's.

If you are not happy with the color of any nylon you have, Krylon and Rustoleum are your best friends. ;)

I am too cheap to buy a different set of gear for each enviroment I might be in. :)

An OD Green pack may come in handy when you decide to go camping with the HS/LC crew, or when you go on that hike to Rainbow Bridge in Utah.

:neener:

I see a lot of OD stuff around town. Most of it seems to be stuff that reservists use now that they're back from the sandy places. I'm in agreement with Billy. I don't think people's level of awareness is to the point where anyone notices a green backpack.

Just out of curiosity, what is it you're worried about being "noticed" doing? Are you worried that someone will notice that your backpack is "military colored?"

"The green pack stands out in urban environments since it looks too...military."

So put a Kerry sticker on it. :neener: I hear they're on sale, too.

I would buy an OD green pack. I like OD green. In fact, a few of my button up shirts are OD green or just a shade or two off. The color just looks good on my skin tone, or so I have been told.

I think OD raises fewer eyebrows than black or camo.

YMMV

Big blue bag

I have this big blue bag I got years ago from Haselblad I use it for my GYM bag it's split in two sides with a good zipper top and on the side. I keep my Glock in it and I don't even get a second look. My thoughts are the less you and your equiptment stand out the less chance of problems.

Skunky, I recectly purchased a new back pack myself. I too found myself looking primarily at the black, then dark blue, then the OD green ones. Then I figured that in an urban environment the best way to disappear was to blend in. So, I decided to go w/ a greyish colored one that kinda looks like every other back pack out there.

I'd say, just stitch on a patch or label from Columbia River, High Sierra, Kelty, etc. and call it good. Of course, you may catch some grief from the HS/LC side for being a granola-eatin' Birkenstock-wearing tree-hugger, but whaddya gonna do...

I second "Coyote tan", although, I was going too call it Khaki. :p

Dark brown works as well.

It doesn't stand out in the city and does a good job of blending in outdoors. Look a deer, what color are they? Ever notice how difficult they are to spot in the forest, even with all that greenery around them?

I had a black fanny pack I really liked, so I stitched a vintage Grateful Dead patch on it. Aside from the irony, now I look like just another oldster who can't let go of the glory days!

When I was trying to decide what color (Maxpedition) Fatboy to get, I went to the mall and looked at what everybody else had. Of those folks carrying any sort of pack, about 80% were black, so that's what I got. I've seen your pic of your OD Falcon and I don't think it looks too military; I'll probably get mine in OD when I get one.

I have an Eagle A-III in OD, and RR 5.11s in OD. People don't notice, it's not a big deal. And, if you're trying to flee from a SHTF situation (Which is what I'd do in 95.3% of SHTF cases), chances are you WILL be in the woods. All of my disaster plans (or at least ones that involve evil JBTs hunting me down) involve the cover of the wild.

My Jansport happens to be banana yellow, thank you very much!

That's because it's black

DOH! Of COURSE it is. :D

I haven't had any issues with my OD Maxpedition vulture.

I haven't put all the cool pouches on it yet, but I will, then we'll see how it works in Vegas...
