I have a Camelbak Motherlode in tactical black. I like OD better for the outdoors but OD stands out too much in the urban environment where I spend most of my life, but everyone has black packs but only guys with skateboards have OD packs. I can't find pics of the older one I have, but I love mine! What pack do you guys use?

<snicker>
Mine's about 40 years old, has an external aluminum frame, and is made of canvas. My grandfather gave it to me when he finished hiking the AT with it. It's really tactical...well, it would have been in 1950. :)

Here's the closest thing I have to a decent photo of it...

Use an Eastpak Unplugged for work. A Jansport Revelation 45 for short trip travel (excellent pack). A Greatland (Target brand) for toting handguns/ammo to the range (cheap but big and very functional, good value but have not seen the same design for some time now, no known model name/number). An old Jansport Big Student to carry gun gear (rests, sandbags, ammo, targets, etc.). Had to modify it to incorporate a top grab handle, no D-rings and rudimentary padding on the straps.

When Camelbak comes out with the BFM in black next year, I'll get me one of those.

Ahhh Skunk-man, I gots me a BFM in OD, yeah it stands out, but then again no one bother me, may have to check out the BFM in black or coyote when they come out next year, or maybe just shuck it all and order me a RAID and some Paraclete pouches.:D

Heh Shadow, I knew you would outtactical me! Got pics of the inside of the beastie?

Can you fit it under an airline seat?

My favorite pack is a 1940's Marine Corps Haversack with the external straps for the blanket roll cut off. It is small and lightweight and will fit most of the minuteman bugout stuff I need. Mostly I carry my stuff in a 1980's Eastpak ??? with the smooth heavy leather bottom. Not very tactical but very practical.

Skunkman, I ain'ts got no digi yet, all my spare money is spent on gear, but my BFM does fit under an airline seat with a kick. I generally just carry my laptop and accessories in main pouch. Top inside netted pouch, some chem lites, pogey bait, outside main pocket is my travel wallet,2 back up SF, usually an A2 and 6P, 2 SF spares kit, give aways for when I do details, lower pocket is my med kit, plus some E&E stuff, a couple of disposable smoke masks etc..
Still haev lots of room for extended period stuff.
Speaking of gear, I just got a RAV and some pouches!! But it doesn't fit my mission profile as well, so I am dumping it on TF.

And there is no WAY I could out tactical you!
:neener:

I shot an e-mail to Camelbak to enquire if they will ever make the BFM in black (my regular color, or lack thereof). The lady who replied said that a bunch of folks are asking for the BFM in black and so they will be making them early next year. The reply was a few months ago and it's on my work computer (hope I didn't trash it). I'll see if I can find it and post the reply verbatim.

Large ALICE...
MOLLE II rucksack
Lowe Alpine CFP-90

I've got all three. I've found the large ALICE the most versatile. However my son took it back to Ft Benning last time he was home on leave :( Along with the Patrol pack for the MOLLE II. :uhoh:

Next investment is going to be a Lightfighter RAID. I don't really have much use for a big rucksack anymore.

Jeff

I use a BFM and a CamelBak Hawg both in OD green. I use mine for Search and Rescue missions, the BFM for wilderness and the Hawg for more urban. I prefer OD because most everyone else uses black so my stuff stands out a little better.

Oh yeah Jeff, I got the RAID fever too!!! Waiting list is Loooooonnngggg especially for CB and OD...

I'm big into camping and hiking so I have a decent amount of gear.

Week-long trips to backcountry: Lowe Alpine Contour IV (navy blue/black). Internal frame pack is expandable for really heavy loads but it's a bit out of date as it does not have a hydration sleeve.

Weekend trips: Eagle AIII Large pack (OD green) or BHI Phoenix pack (black). Both have the side accessory pouches so I can get ~4,000 cu in from the AIII pack and ~3,000 from the Phoenix.

Day packs: Kelty Velocity pack (black/gray) or HydraStorm Cyclone (OD). I have a older CamelBak HAWG (black) but that doesn't have enough capacity to be a true daypack.

Here it is.

Sir -

Yes, we have had lots and lots of requests for the BFM in black, so we will be adding it to our 2004 product line. Look for it sometime early this coming year.

Sincerely -

Hello,

Will the BFM ever be available in black?

Thank you for your attention.

Ron V.

I have been using an Eagle A-III pack for about 18 months now and its a great pack. You can add pouches; there are plenty of d-rings and it can be configured up to about 2700 cubic inches with the pouches. Since I got mine, the Lightfighter RAID pack was introduced and its at the top of the food chain for 3 day packs. Both can be seen at the lightfighter website.

OK - I have a walmart special that is loaded with some survival stuff in my truck. It is yellow - I figure if I ever need what is in it I will need to be noticed and rescued anyway.

I don't understand what ya'll use your packs for.
Can ya'll please explain?
Do you take them with you ever day or something?

Serious backpacking:

Camp trails external frame hiker w/extended top bar. Very useful, though not as expandable as newer packs. Yes internal frames are more comfy, yes they can hold more gear.. however try packing someone ELSE on your back with an internal frame. I've done it with an external frame pack. I didn't like it, wouldn't volunteer to do it again, but there is a good 'survival' reason to keep ONE external frame pack in your hiking group. Any pack can be modified to take a water bladder, that wasn't a top concern for me. My camp trails packer has seen 20+ tears of sevrice in some of the most hostile country available. Two Rim to Rim to Rim trips in the Grand Canyon, Philmont, numerous 50 milers, used the frame to pack out elk quarters etc.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If I was to buy a new one:

The Mckinley looks good.

Day Pack: Jansport dayhiker w/ soft frame and belly band. Not the most comfy, as its more or less a big bag with straps, but it has expansion zippers that can allow you to carry all kinds of gear. Easily takes a lot of wieght, decent 'bob'/overnight pack.

Hunting pack: Just the essentials in a fleece fannypack. TP/spcae blanket/deer drag/candle/gorp etc. Have enough stuff init to spend the night in the woods if I HAD to, not that I'd want to.

PS, no such thing as too much water, no such comfort as dry socks.

I use backpacks to free up my hands. Instead of a briefcase for work, I use an Eastpak. Instead of carrying my handguns in a case and carry it in my hand I free up that hand to carry something else when I use a backpack usually reducing the number of trips to the car by 1.

I'm number 10 on the waiting list for CB Raid Packs. I was number 35, and they had ordered 50, but Eagle only delivered 25. :( Currently I'm using a Fatboy for daily carry, and a CB MULE in DC for going to Six Flags or such.
