Hello everyone!

New to the THR, and I need some help placing and identifying a beat up Remington 870 Wingmaster that I recently obtained. I've read that, before Remington came out with the police magnum, the company offered modified wingmasters for LE use, but this one is not marked riot or police. It does have what looks like a factory magazine extension and 20 inch barrel. Walnut stocks, "corn cob" fore stock, factory recoil pad and sling studs. Serial is V668XXXV. Stamped on the receiver is Remington with the target icon and Wingmaster Model 870. It is 12 ga (2 3/4s only). Very smooth action, metal trigger group. The store I bought it from told me it was an old police trade in, said the extension was factory, looks very similar to "police magnum" 870s posted on that forum and others. But shouldn't it be marked with police or riot?

Any help would be appreciated!!!

Thanks to all.

Any Remington 12ga wood will fit it. If you are looking for the satin finish oil finish stock set with the R3 recoil pad and the corncob front end, they sometimes call them 870P models.

This is an ex Arizona Highway Patrol with a 20" barrel and +2 OEM extension and a new 870P stockset like I described above

look around on gunbroker and Numrich for a wood set. the words "870p, riot, police, corncob" should be paid attention to when selecting the right item. don't be afraid to send an email with any questions you might have beforehand. you may also be able to purchase the 870p stuff through Remington directly as they do currently outfit some 870p models with wood.

Well, I picked up a very used 18" 870 Police that was old enough that it was not rollmarked "Police", simply 870 Wingmaster as they used to sell. The shop I bought it from had at least a dozen of these and only one or two had the "Police" marked receiver, but they were all police shotguns. I found a set of new 870P stocks on Gunbroker for $40 including an R3 recoil pad, and they fit perfectly (just like AndyJ's picture above). The original corn cob forend and stock were really beat up from years of police use and had to go. Another SG that was carried a lot, and shot a little. The outside was very beat up, but the inside looked only gently used. Enjoy!

Remington came out with 870 Police and Riot guns not long after the introduction of the 870 in 1950. For a 'born on' date, call the factory during business hours (Eastern time) at 1-800-243-9700 and tell them you think you have an 870R (Riot gun, denoted by the 20" barrel- early Wingmaster marked Police guns had 18" barrels) and give them the serial number. They can tell you when it left the factory, and in what configuration. The receivers on Wingmaster era Police and Riot guns were not otherwise marked any differently- the furniture and barrels were the only real difference, and of course all those things can easily be changed.

For replacement Police style wood, see eBay, Gunbroker etc. But don't trash the original wood!

In 1976 I bought the model you describe with an 18 bbl, pistol grip with folding stock plus the original cheap wood. Still have it except I got rid of the pistol grip and folding face destroying metal stock! 7 shot mag.

My Dad got the 20" version with rifle sights. 8 shot mag

Both guns are parkerized and are very reliable guns. The rifle sighted riot gun is tough on deer and hogs in the brush with slugs. Great guns. They get carried more than shot.

Wow, thanks to everyone for all the help. I will make the call to Remington and track down the serial #. My gun looks a lot like the one in the photo posted above. My gun does have the police wood. Am I to believe my gun's tube extension came from the factory?
