odd form1 question

If I want to make a SBR out of an AR receiver that I made from an 80% forging, who do I list as the original manufacture on the form 1?

My concern is that if I put "homemade" in the box, they will assume that I have made a mstake and think that I am the manufacturer just because I am assembling the SBR when in fact I truly am the manufacturer. Has anyone done this? Well, I mean anyone here, I know someone somewhere has

You have the name you'll have engraved for the SBR picked out, right? Put that in both boxes. That identifies you as the entity that is manufacturing the SBR and also is the entity that manufactured the Title I rifle.

"Homemade" didn't make that rifle. You did. Just tell the exact truth.

So "John Smith Revocable Living Trust" would be listed in both boxes? That makes sense, to me, but do you think it will cause confusions on their end? Would it be a good idea to attach a letter explaining that I personally made the receiver?

You'll be fine. You don't need to send a letter. Just put "John Smith Revocable Living Trust" City, St. in Box 4(a). You can be the original manufacturer as well as the Manufacturer of the SBR.

Don't forget you need to assign a model number, and serial number as well.

rj is correct as usual. YOU are the manufacturer and the 'maker' as well. You can assign it any serial number and model number that you care to. You also need to assign it a caliber; I don't think ATF/NFA is accepting "Multi" these days for that part. And remember that you have to assign it dimensions based on what your intended original configuration will be. You won't be restricted to that only, but you have to pick one.

And it just hit me, when you said model number and serial number - THAT is how they're gonna understand what's up with my trust name being in both areas. When they see something like WAR15 for a model and #001 as a SN, they'll realize this ain't some off the shelf jobber

Correct. I had a fellow make a couple of custom receivers for me (because I was still in Iraq and machining is not my best skill) for building up a couple of guns for the shop where I work part-time. So his company name was on each of them in fairly small print, but the model and caliber were what I asked for as well as the serial numbers.

If you are "making" your own receiver, can't you build it as a "handgun" and not a "rifle" and so save the $200 "SBR" aggrevation?

Can't put a stock on a handgun. Either way it's an SBR if it has a stock and short barrel, whether the receiver started out as a handgun or rifle.
