Oddball competition guns.

I was reading "Most unusual guns you've carried" thread, and was wondering if anyone has ever felt the urge to compete with an uncommon firearm - Skeet shooting with an Armsel Striker or Siaga 12, shot an IPSC match with a Luger or Mauser C96 "Broomhandle."

Guess I'll go first...

I shoot skeet with an 870 - not that uncommon of a gun, I know, but except for a few guys with auto-loaders, I've never seen anyone else there use anything other than an O/U.

I shot an archery tournement using a recurve with no sights, competing against people with "tacticool" compounds.

My Dad took an introduction to action shooting class at the local range, which he completed with a J-Frame.

Anyone else?

I saw a guy compete in an IDPA match witha Coonan 357 auto. BIG boom.

I've wanted to use my Luger in a match for fun, but where does an 8 shot striker fired 9mm fit into the IDPA rules? BUG division, maybe.

I did IDPA with a Seecamp DA triggered ODI Viking frame on a Colt 1991A1 upper. It was never a terribly reliable or accurate piece.

I have run a round of trap with a black powder double barrel shotgun. My hands and face were black by the end of the round. Didn't but too many clays but it was a hoot.

I once was shooting at a local sporting clay shoot when a guy turned up wearing full combats and yellow shooting glasses - to gasps of astonishment and grumbling of disapproval from the other guns, he took a Franchi Spas 12 out of his gun case and took his place in the line to shoot... IIRC he was a very fine shot!

We do monthly side matches after our regular IDPA Club Match, using all kinds of guns. And we do an annual "house gun" match as well -- always with the strangest stuff we can find.

So, yes, I've competed with a Tech 9, a Charter .22 snubby revolver, a full auto Uzi with .22 conversion, an ancient Turkish Mauser, a side-hammer double 12-ga SxS, and a belt-fed semi M1919, and I think that was all just last year!

(Oh, and just remembered, I nearly competed with a Hakim, but it went down before I got my chance. )

I was at a local, informal, steel plate match in CT (side by side, 2 shooters at a time) when the next pair each loaded a cap&ball revolver and proceeded to obscure the targets with smoke. The format was 2 white plates on either side of an orange stop plate, you could drop the white plates in any order. Unfortunately for the black powder shooters, one of them missed twice in a row, meaning he couldn't drop all the plates without reloading, so he just dropped the stop plate. They both ended up emptying downrange to clear, but I forget how they showed the RO they were empty. At the same match a local LEO managed to rotate one plate 90 degrees with his 9mm and then tried to hit a 3/8 wide target, unsuccessfully.

I have shot handguns against rifles in matches and Won! These were offhand
matches.

It wasn't a match, but an acquaintance who is always grumbling about his sights being off was "sighting in" a new rifle on the 100-yard line and I got bored watching him fiddle endlessly with the sights.
So I started ringing the 18" gong with my Ruger mkIII, I even got a 10 for 10 hit ratio for one magazine, while he continued to miss from prone with a rifle.

Shot a three gun match with my SMLE, single shot 12 gauge, and a S&W M37 (on a dare). Didn't actually do all that bad, compared to some folks running traditional three gun gear. I did get smoked by the guy running all cowboy stuff (lever action rifle, double barrel coach gun, and SA revolver), but he was ranked quiet highly at the state level for cowboy shooting.

It was a long time ago, Bodega bay trap shoot, it was meat & booze shoot me a my bud and first wife went, I had my Duck gun 30in full choke it was rem, pump, any way i got hot that day and beat a guy that had all the top end gun and jacket, and he was telling me i was going to miss at the time I was on the line! i did not miss! So when he gets ready I say It will suck to lose to a guy with toilet paper in his ear and a Field gun! he choked and I got the booze.

(Oh, and just remembered, I nearly competed with a Hakim, but it went down before I got my chance. )

I use to regularly wax guys who were shooting their high dollar ARs with this Hakim, 100 and 200 yard steel were it's bread and butter...and unlike a .223 it never turn a steel plate. Add on one of my 30 round MG 13 mags and I was good to go!

I shoot local USPSA Production matches with my modified 9mm Chinese C96 Broomhandle. It's a heck of a lot of fun, and surprisingly competitive -- once you get use to the stripper clips! (I polish and wax the steel spring of the clips for smooth and fast charging ).

For competition I changed out all of the coil springs (to Wolff), polished the feed-ramp and chamber, modified the magazine (stronger spring, beveling, polishing, etc.), flared the stripper clip slots, rounded certain sharp edges (top of grip frame, ejection port), ground down some of the trigger guard (to better fit my large hands), modified the rear sights to a square notch and ground down to shoot POA, epoxy filled the grips for tighter fit to frame, polished sear and hammer, removed metal from under sear to increase engagement with hammer (due to occasional doubling issues that scared the <deleted> out of me!).

I even made a (primitive) dropped and offset competition holster for the Broom, since not too many C96 holsters are made for USPSA/IPSC competition .

Let's see....

I shoot our monthly High Power matches, competing against mostly AR's, with a Swiss K-31 albeit heavily modified. Scores are always in the Expert range. The real rub however, is the fact that I shoot ONLY cast bullets. Guys can't believe that a 60 year old rifle shooting bullets made of wheelweights will shoot that good. One of the AR shooters said my rifle is "a freak of nature".
When I was a teenager, I competed on the county 4-H trap team. I shot trap with an 870TB and a 30" barrel that had a full choke. Mind you, this was back in the day prior to screw in chokes. My Dad bought me a 26" barrel choked I/C and I would take it with me to our practices as well as when I shot league trap. When there a long wait to be squadded, I'd install the short barrel and while the time away shooting skeet.
I once shot a round of 16 yd. trap with a Stevens 311 SxS in .410. Used carefully assembled handloads and broke 17 of 25. There were other competitors on the line who actually acted pissed off at me!
I now have a Richland Arms .410 SxS in which I had screw in chokes installed with which I shoot skeet. When I was shooting every Sunday, 22 and 23 were my usual scores.
I also shoot skeet and Sporting Clays with my AyA SxS 20 ga. That and the .410 always draw stares from the O/U snobs.

I shoot skeet with my S-12. My best with it was a 21. People think it is pretty darn cool; most want to shoot it. Someday I would like to load up my 20 rd. drum and a 5 rd mag and see how fast I can shoot a complete round.

I've shot a straight with my Win. 1300. I love it when people ask if I want true doubles or not, as if it's that hard to cycle a pumpgun. I don't own an U/O or a more traditional auto, although I'd like to.

4 of us went down to shoot sporting clays last summer with our "3-gun" shotguns. 2 guys just had the 10 shot magazines, I had a 13 shot tube on my Competitionmaster, with a 21"bbl, so the mag tube was a LOT longer than the bbl, and the 4th guy had an Xrail on his 11-87 with 23 round capacity.

Nice gun there! This is the thread for me, I just bought a Stevens 237 before Christmas and got here before that and will be shooting trap with it. Single shot, I dont shoot doubles only singles. I also will be doing F Class shooting with a Mosin Nagant 91/30 and its a VERY VERY accurate gun. Less than 1'' groups at 100 yards.

How's this for an oddball gun..... A common style in our competition, but strange by most outsiders standards....


Push feed single shot M70 Win in 243. 27.5in Kreiger barrel with 12" extension. Stock and shoulder hook by me. Shot in competition with open sights and a barrel rest. weighs over 20lbs. Similar to my Win 52C, shot in the same type competition as the above except in the rimfire class. Both at 200yds.
