I am planning on shooting my stock AK in some 3 gun Comps. My question is Mil-surp ammo allowed to be shot at siad competions. I understand that most ranges will not allow you to shoot them at steel targets for the fear of damaging them.

Can anyone that shoot AKs in competion give me some insight on this. I would greatly appreciate any and all answers.

Generally you don't want to shoot anything steel core at steel targets. It can crater them, even 5.56 SS1019/M855 is verboten.

Most competitive rifles and carbines have an optic. Be able to carry spare magazines safely, work on your magazine changes.

Some clubs may have a special division for irons only. Check with the match director about specific rules before you go, have fun and make friends!

Check with your local matches about the ammo. It is not "mil-surp" per se, but ammo with steel in the bullet which is prohibited. Generally, steel jacketed ammo will not damage steel targets, but it is up to individual clubs to decide. Some prohibit any ammo that attracts a magnet. Yes, penetrator ammo (steel or other core like M855) will hurt even rifle steel.

Let us know where you want to compete and we can assist more.

As above steel jacket won't hurt steel plate but it will fail the "magnet" test. Talk to the MD before hand a good wire cutter to nip the bullet in two to show them it's lead inside is a good idea.

Im from the nashville area. But I will be soon moving to Pensacola Florida.

Anyone that does run an ak for 3 gun, what kind of optic do you run? or any iron sight mods?

I shoot an iron sight AK in 223. I replaced the crappy trigger with a Power 2-stage. I can ring 12 inch plates out to 350-ish yards if I take my time. In a match that range comes inside 200-250 yards.

Yugo surplus 7.62x39 is copper/lead, no steel. Pretty accurate from what I've read, but it's corrosive, so clean up afterwards.

I have a SAR-3 (AK variant chambered in 5.56/.223) that I run. Mods I use for competition are RSA Trigger, Ultimak gas rail with a Primary Arms red dot that is co-witnessed with the irons.

Like others have said, it is up to the group or range you shoot with/at on what they will accept for ammo.

At the risk of speaking anathema, what would be lost by loading the AK with cast bullets in the 140 to 160 grain range? Momentum at the target seems to be more important than actual K.E., so the slower, heavier slugs may retain their velocity well enough to slam the plates down with greater authority. The flatter meplat found on most cast rifle projectiles might also enhance energy transferance, all other factors being equal. Just a thought.

As I understand it, running cast bullets in a gas operated firearm will clog the gas system with lead. How long that will take to occur, I do not know.
