Of discretion and licensing

Dutchess

Where in NY are you? I am from Dutchess county.

How is licensing in Dutchess these days? I lived there in the 80's and it wasn't bad at all, never had any problem adding pistols to my permit, and it was unrestricted.

Again I have to add that things are very very different in my part of the state NY permit laws are really controlled at the county level. My local government is very gun friendly. I also teach the class required for the permit. In a lot of the state you are required to take the full 10 hr NRA course here its just a four hour course. Our sheriff has the call on that one and he's a RKBA supporter. Of course this is the western part of the state, lower population density, open country ect. Also some of the best whitetail hunting east of the Mississippi. If I had to move east, I would not.

Yes--just nitpicking a little, but the LAW is the same statewide. It's just that the law gives the judge a lot of power of "discretion," which means that it's applied differently depending on where you are, and even more importantly, who your judge is. A change of judge can turn a gun-friendly county into an unfriendly county overnight.

Faced with gun laws like that, I would seriously considering relocating to a more Second Amendment- friendly part of the country.

You got that right -foot
Im moving to KY as soon as I can -I hope northern Ky where it not so hot --! I cant wait to be outaaa here.
My boss is liberal Bomma lover and Hilery and chucki are much loved here -Even though im in western ny I still get the stupid idiots who think guns cause crime ..

when I was younger and uninformed

I bought a .22 from an individual...
called SLED and asked how to register it.
Helpful fellow on the phone said "thats not a state requirement" I asked what I needed to legally do to make sure it showed up as mine at a certain time and date to protect me and the seller. He said draw up papers and both sign them if it made me feel better. I reiterated that I'd like to register it as mine and he asked "why" and "what business is it of the state's what I owned"

Nice guy, really tried to educate me. Amazing how even govt agencies can vary in the realm of freedom and rights and how they're veiwed. Sure wish I knew that guy's name. He actually made me start thinking for myself and not like a govt serf... Thank you whoever you were... You put me on the path to personal liberty. Now I'm a staunch opponent of government minding my business. Like that fellow, what business is it of the government's?
