this isnt a non-firearm weapon yet but i thought i would share my experiences with admiral steel like i mentioned in another thread.

i ordered 50pounds of assorted steels 1095,1080,ats34, in thicknesses from 3/32-3/16 and 1"-2" wide to turn into knives.

it looks like the pieces were sheared from a sheet but the shearing was with the grain not across it (a good thing). the radius left on the edge from the shearing was very small...about 1/32" which is smaller than most hot rolled steel ive gotten from knife supply houses. shaping and surface grinding will eliminate almost all of the radius.

the steel had the expected as-rolled dark grey surface with little or no scratches or corrosion...nothing that will cause problems.

the pieces did have slight warpage to them...most were warped about 1/4-1/2" over a length of 60"...which is perfectly acceptable to me. 2 pieces were warped about 3" over 60" length which could be a problem for long knives but it will be used for 6" knives..i applied slight pressure and reduced the warpage to about 1/2"-1"..some more fanagaling and with the surface grind it shouldnt be an issue.

for the heck of it i heated up a couple of inches of the ats34 and 1080 with a torch and quenched it (plate quench for ats34, water for 1080) and both hardened to the point where a file wouldnt cut them. i broke the pieces off and the grain was nice, small, and even. i doubt there will be any heat treating issues. as for the reported pitting in the ats34...it will be at least a month before im to the finishing stages to find out if there are hidden flaws in the steel (which would be hitachis fault not admirals).

ive been happy with my dealings with admiral this time around and they will be hearing from me again. terry was pleasant to deal with, the items shipped fast and arrived in good shape. the selection and prices are much better than most places. if they keep up the good work i will be able to order most my steels from them and flatstock.com for tool steels (man their prices are good)

Well, ecos, I pulled the trigger and ordered some ATS-34 and 440C from Terry at Admiral. He seems great to work with and I can't wait to start working with it. I will have to send it for heat treat but I feel my stuff will appeal to a larger market than if I just use O1.

i hope it works out good for you! ive been in contact a few times since the order and he asked me to tell anyone dealing with admiral that if they have any problems to contact them and they will make everything right.

ps. on an off note...i will be moving to a new place tomorrow so i wont be online for a few days-week. see ya all in a few!

Nice to hear.

Way back, I ordered some 3/32" 440-C that was very pitted. This didn't show itself till after heat treat in the finishing stages...that was some 20 blades. :( I actually have some on my desk right now that I'll probbaly sandblast instead of rub out.

If you like D2 check out: http://www.toolanddie.com

Please do not heat treat complex steels like ATS-34 and D-2 with a torch. These steels require careful control of both time and temperature to get their best performance !!!!! The stainless steels require much higher hardening temperatures [ ~ 1900F] for example .Do it only in a furnace that has good temperature controls....I give metallurgical advice in forums like www.bladeforums.com

Got my order from Terry today - woohoo! Can't wait to make some stabby stuff out of stainless! :)

This stuff looks pretty good and real straight.

i agree mete and i do read your advice on bladeforums, knifenetwork.com (and i think u are on don foggs site too arent u?)

i was just doing a quick test. i had heard of others complain that they got batches of ats34 from admiral wouldnt harden and a file would cut it. i just brought it up to critical(1900ish)real quick with zero soak time. i figure if it forms enough martensite with no soak where a file wont cut it then a proper heat treat should work fine.

ive been having my high alloy steels heat treated by local firms in the past but im switching to paul bos for future batches.

im just now finally starting to work with my batch of steel. im moved into the new (rental)house and its going to be GREAT to have a workshop at home. we have quite a large root cellar here with steel ceilings and cement/steel walls with a built in ventilation system....i can finally set up a nice hot shop and try my hand at forging damascus(when money permits) without risk of burning the place down.

the only downside is im used to a super speedy cable connection and we cant get cable or dsl here...im stuck with slooow dialup..im currently connected at 28.8 bah!

Oh man, dial-up would suck after cable! I'll type slower! LOL

I got the steel yesterday afternoon and now have 10 small skinners profiled and ready for drilling and grinding. I never bought 36" pieces before, and found I can get 5 knives out of one piece where I only got 2 out of a 18" piece. I'll send at least 20 knives to Bos and the cost to make these ATS-34 knives won't be much more than they were in O1, actually.

just an update...

i finished up all of the 1080/1095 from my last batch from admiral...i encountered no problems with the steel after making probably 150-200ish knives. i still havent used the ats-34 yet (im having too much fun with hamon lines :D )

was happy enough to order another batch from them that arrived in good shape today. someday soon i will start working stainless again and will try the ats-34

o and they installed cable on my road a few months ago THANK GOD!

I've used a bunch of the ATS-34 and got another order I'm working on. All the 440C is still sitting there but I'll get to it. The steel has been good and dealing with Terry I've had no problems.
