Off to Skunky-ville, then to North Carolina...

With all the fires, SoCal has basically become a big firing range:D

The weather in SoCal is nice, but I think freedom, low taxes, and no traffic is better.

The women in SoCal are nice, but probably, not-so-shallow tactical WOMAN (a man only needs 1 good one) is all you need, and I find that to be a difficult catagory to fill in SoCal.

I think you're going to LOVE it here. I just moved from Kali as well - It's kinda strange at first though. It's almost like I've turned back the clock as far as gun laws etc. Almost sureal in a way. Not a bad thing, but when you walk into a store and see what you can walk away with it's hard to believe at first. I live just north of Charlotte in Cornelius by lake Norman. Beautiful area. The only thing I miss at this point is the 1000 yrd outdoor ranges or the shoot as far as safely possible desert camping trips (mojave area). Other than that, I'm looking forward to some good hunting this spring. Also, I'm sure you'll notice the drivers and the differences as far as that goes. Oh yeah, pick a driver as everyone is NASCAR crazy around here. Housing is incredibly affordable and the weather is mild so far. Give me a PM when you get here.

Cheers- Sidearm

Congrats on the new gig, sorry your vote is leaving but I'm sure you will be happier. Buy an AR and shot a few for me, will ya?

Good search seems to indicate that Class III (automatic weapons) are outlawed - is that true?

Welcome to the Carolinas!! Consider living in the Rock Hill SC area, especially if you're working on the south side of Charlotte. The taxes are better, the real estate cheaper and you don't need the approval of a Sheriff to get a CWP. But, NC's also great. The wife and I would've moved there instead of SC, but the job situation panned out in Columbia first. In hindsight, though, I think it was for the best. In either event, we have some great matches at the Mid Carolina Rifle Club outside Columbia. So if you don't mind a 70 mile or so trip, you should come check us out!

Sidearm, I will definitely have to talk to ya, 'cause I'll be working in Mooresville, near you. That big lake on the map looks like an awfully inviting place to live, as well as fish & ski. :D

Started the new job this week, I had to laugh - the IT admin has pictures on his office wall of him shooting MP5's. I told him I have two gun safes and he said we'd get along fine:D

I am pretty psych'd - things are looking pretty good right now, and if I'm lucky I might talk a cute lady engineer into visiting, too.:D

AS for NASCAR, one division of the new company is an official sponsor - don't know yet if I'll be working that end of the business, but it's a possibility.

An associate of mine is moving from California to a "free state" (Texas), and we were talking about value propositions in moving. The amount of housing he could buy versus here just blew my mind. He was like "yeah, my wife and I want to have another child, and we can't afford that in SoCal".

Exhibit A: Here at this time on the SF Bay Area Peninsula, 3/2 1100 square foot bungalow 'starter homes' on small lots go for $480,000 - really crappy homes go for $400,000. Places where you could spread out start in the 800s and 900s. All to live next to some ultra Liberal neighbor? No thanks.

In Texas, I could be a PLAYER for that much money. A few minutes on Realtor.com has me rethinking my whole plan. Tennessee, Minnesota, hell, North Carolina... sometimes its compelling to think about leaving California for higher ground.

My haunt in NC was Rocky Mount, a few years back. Very friendly people, excellent (though rich) southern food, and a few crazy drivers.

Good luck in the Carolinas!

How far will you be from Duke?

at least a day trip, Duke is in Durham in central NC (same cluster as Raliegh and Chapel hell [hill]

i grew up about 5-6 miles from the Duke campus.

will second the stay way for chapel hill remarks.... and since you're going to Charlotte that's prety dern easy. about the only things i EVER found in Chapel Hill that were worth the drive even from Durham (the towns abutt each other in numerous places BTW, for those who are not local) were the Used bookstores, the Bicycle shops (better service) and the Saturn Dealer. as far as i care the rest of the town was a hellmouth. Franklin street (main drag for UNC students) wasn't even worth getting you shoes dirty, when i left.

and finally Congrats on your return to the land of the free

yeah...real estate....

When I bought here in Fresno in 98, the housing market was depressed...now it's booming, oh darn it:evil:

At this moment, from what I can see, homes are about 2/3 the cost in NC than what they are in Fresno, which is still one of the cheaper parts of CA. Of course, if I snag something like a lakeside home, it will probably cost more.

One thing I am thinking 'bout doing, though, is acquiring a M1a & Mini14, just in case they get restricted while I am gone. There's a chance I might come back and it would be good to have things already registered here.

Yeah, we should hook up. I'll give you a PM-. Fresno huh? Bulldogs forever. I've got several friends that still live in Fresno- runs and owns an almond farm. From what I've heard though, it's turned into a rather big gang area? Hmm... funny really, in reality it's just an inland farmland community, or at least that's what it used to be. At the moment I'm in the process of buying on Lake Norman (Victoria Bay). You'll have to come over after closing (Dec 27th) ... Cheers and welcome! It's nice to have fellow Cali friends out here. Let's hook up for some fising, hunting & shooting!

Sidearm-

Good thinking.

Great state! You will be able to take long weekend trips to the mountains in the west and the ocean in the east......the best of both worlds. It seems to be a reasonably gun friendly state. I can carry with my KY CCW permit, and that is why I don't go to South Carolina. For some reason SC is stuck in a anti-reciprocity limbo. NC has alot of good fishing, hunting and race tracks. The only drawback is that it seems that many NC drivers think they are Richard Petty or Dale Jr.and think their 79 Camaro is Nascar worthy.:what:

Live in Houston for 3 years THEN say that!!! NC drivers are NOTHING compared to the nutjobs around here :what: only place i've seen worse than here (Houston) is LA!!

Wife adn i are making plans to be someplace like El Paso the weekend the Super bowl hits town. i don't EVEN wanna think about how bad THAT'S gonna be.

Hey! I resent that!!! I dont even have a Camaro!!!

however my fairmont, built out of JY parts, has seen 140+

Years ago Richard Petty retired from racing (well, driving in a race car). At that time he could name the political office and take it if he so desired.

Well, Richard decides to run for Secty of State IIRC and proceeds to run. One day on I-77 he got really frustrated with a driver who wasn't moving fast enough to suit him. Long story short, Mr. Petty tagged the drivers bumper just like at the race track. Big news // stink on the news.

He lost the election.

Handgun Purchase Permits take two to three weeks

HOLY MOLY!!!!!!!

Here in Greenville it was NEXT day! :p

Sorry just kinda suprising. Guess our sherriff here doesn't have a problems with his "subjects" protecting themselves.

Waitone...

I'd almost forgotten about that....!! :D

course IIRC even BEFORE that his campaign wasn't exactly "seen with all seriousness" (ie the only thing keeping the laughter to a minimum WAS the fact that he was "Richard Petty").

Ha! Made it!

NOw where's a good gun shop round Mooresville? I need Break Free:)

AHHHH another exile moving to the promised land....

few things...

Some of us hate NASCAR

DUKE IS OF THE DEVIL!!!

My county (Randolph) takes 5-10 minutes (sometimes 20) for pistol permits

Big cities suck no matter where you move...

I live about an hour and a half from Mooresville...looks like I am going to be visiting that area from time to time...We can all get together and shoot pictures of my ex's husband, who just got a job in Mooresville, and decided to move there with my eldest in tow:cuss:

Welcome:D

I don't know.

* CA has CCW, NC has CCW.

* CA has an AWB, NC dosen't (that's a win for sure, but if AB2218 gets passed CA's AWB will not apply to rifles used with 10 round mags.)

* CA has Class-III machine guns. NC does not (that's a loss.)

It would take more than that level of gun law change to make me move.

we dont have classIII weapons?? I thought we did...hmmmm

CA only gonna get more liberal

NC has a LONG way to go before we get to where CA is RIGHT now

which reminds me strangely enough...

...I wonder if I can get 1911Tuner to work on my .40 cal Double Eagle Commander:evil: :D

I thought so....I was hoping that rifle I fired at the range was a legal full-auto and NOT a NO!NO! bad evil weapon of death:D

Right now pollen is my enemy...:fire:
