New toys are a comin' !! :D :what: :D

Traditions Hawken Woodsman Percussion in .50 cal

Traditions .50 cal Percussion William Parker pistol

Traditions .44 cal 1858 Bison revolver

Between smoke poles and traditional archery... I've been a busy feller !

Life's rough sometimes. Heck... I'm even learning to make my own longbows. Got one 2/3 done and more staves waiting in the wings. Me thinks one of 'em will be a Hickory longbow, backed with Jen-ewe-wine Spitting Cobra... another with Rattle Snake. The other two will be Bamboo backed Hickory and Bamboo backed Argentine Osage. What to do with the other huge stave of Osage Orange?

Osama-Obama can't git 'em all ! :cuss: :banghead: :neener:

Ratdog68;
I think we have talked to each other on Archery Talk..

Raider2000, some one here stole my name so I had to go with this one.

Anyway, congrats to your new toys coming your way & yes I'd love to see some pictures of them as well as that Griz you have.

I can see the black powder smoke cloud raising over the sound right now! Congrats on the new toys. Old bones have forced me to give up the bows, but as long as my hands can work a loading lever I'll be making smoke.

Ratdog68 kindly shared some images of his bow in progress with me. Hopefully, he'll do the same for the rest of the forum's users.

If you are the least bit interested in archery, or custom bows, or even what the heck Argentine Osage looks like, you are in for a REAL treat. Seriously.

WOW is all I can say!

Thanks Smokin' Gun... did some cleaning on my .54 last night... wow... this piece is a little nicer than I first thought it was.

Messerist... pix will have to wait until they arrive... then all the "kids" will have to line up for pic or two. Hmmm... I prob'ly should have pix of ALL of 'em, as well as the serial numbers cataloged.

Voodoochile ! Er... Raider2000... er... we're sooo confused !!

Yeah... same ol' same ol' here !

I'll have to do some pix... that Grizz is sweet. Waitin' on my B50 supplies so I can twist up a new Flemish for it before I take pix.

Madcratebuilder... yeah... I don't fit in too well with your "typical Seattlite". I still have my "McCain/Palin" sign in my yard. LOL Sorry to hear you're not able to enjoy the bows anymore... stay with what you can though !!

Otay... pix is the cry (MCGunner)... I'll getcha some.

Otay...

Since there appears to be a little bit of interest... I'll share the link for the bow build I'm sharing with my fellow archery folks on another forum. I'm havin' a ball learning to make these. It's been nearly addicting (traditional archery).

Anywho... grab a cup of joe and follow along as I learn the basics here... this little project has been a nice diversion from the remodel from hell that's consumed my attention for way too long.

The American Flat Bow, made of Argentine Osage, backed with Bamboo, and Bocote for the riser. The string will be hand twisted of B50 Dacron, and I'll fletch up some cedar shafts with "left wing" feathers of 5" of length... the fletching will have a left helical twist, and will probably have some cresting wraps on them.

That longbow looks fantastic. I shoot a Mohawk custom longbow. Getting ready I think to eventually start building my first underhammer muzzlelaoder and then might give the longbow build a try. Yours came out fantastic :D

Hmmm... lemme see

Not sure how good these shots will be, but these are from the vendor's website. First, the Hawken...

Next... the William Parker Pistol...

And... the 1858 Bison...

Thanks NobleSniper... I almost went with the rifle kit... but, it didn't have the double set triggers and I wanted to have 'em on my new rifle. I still wanna do one though.

My bow isn't done, all that just brings me to the general shape of the bow. I still have to shape the grip/tips and the tillering of the bow before it can get finished. I'll be paying close attention to the tiller phase. The bow could become junk in a few strokes of the hand.

NAW!!!!!!!!! You have done to well so far for that to happen. Keep it up and before long you will be pulling a string on that thing ;)

The BP stuff looks great. And I love the talk about the long bows. It's something I'd been holding in reserve until I got retired.... which, as it turns out, was just last Friday.

And as for all the jumping up and down like a kid in the first coupl'a posts? All I can say is WAY TO GO AND I'D BE DOING THE SAME! ! ! ! ! :D

Post up range reports on how the smokers shoot. I especially like the looks of that William Parker. I may just need to look into that as my first muzzle loading pistol.

Yeah... I likes double set triggers

My Cherokee .45 Cal carbine doesn't have 'em... but my Patriot pistol in .45 cal does. The .54 Cal carbine I picked up yesterday has 'em and they're set really LIGHT.

Only time will tell

whether I've been payin' attention adequately for the bow to turn out as sweet (when it's done) as it is now.

I've also snagged up some "U finish it" longbow kits. They haven't arrived yet, but I guess we'll see how those are... and, how I like those as compared to doing them from scratch like this one. I can give a link to a couple of places if someone's wanting to give one of those a try at getting their hooves wet with making one of your own. I've found 'em ranging from between $50 - $150 ea. The high end "kit" is a bamboo backed hickory with a reflex/deflex design, tillered and ready to finish. I mostly got that one to eyeball closely... may try and do up some of those from scratch after seeing a good pattern up close and personal like.

Oh yeah... I'll have to drag the camera along the next time I toddle on up to the range to make some noise and fill the air with smoke. I love doin' that while a gaggle of 'em around are plinkin' away with the .22's (not that there's anything WRONG with that). :neener:

Wait till ya have a few of them young uns that shoot those 9mm super duper plastic guns get a whiff of what REAL gun powder smell like & that your old smoke wagon can shoot just as accurately as their toys.
