Please keep this thread civil. But I feel that this should be discussed if it hasn't/isn't been already.

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police say a man wearing a bulletproof vest opened fire on officers during a domestic disturbance call, killing three of them.

Police chief Nate Harper says the motive for Saturday's shooting isn't clear.

Friends say the gunman recently had been upset about losing his job and that he feared the Obama administration was poised to ban guns.

The three dead officers are Eric Kelly, Stephen Mayhle and Paul Sciullo III. Kelly had been on the force for 14 years and the other two only two years each.

Another officer was shot in the hand and a fifth broke his leg on a fence.

The gunman, 23-year-old Richard Poplawski, was arrested after a four-hour standoff.

He is charged with three counts of aggravated homicide and assault, police said Saturday.

One witness reported hearing hundreds of shots.

The shootings occurred just two weeks after four police officers were fatally shot March 21 in Oakland, Calif., in the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement since Sept. 11, 2001.

One of the gunman's friend, Edward Perkovic, said Poplawski feared "the Obama gun ban that's on the way" and "didn't like our rights being infringed upon."

Another longtime friend, Aaron Vire, said Poplawski feared that President Obama was going to take away his rights, though he said he "wasn't violently against Obama."

Perkovic, a 22-year-old who said he was Poplawski's best friend, said he got a call at work from him in which he said, "Eddie, I am going to die today. ... Tell your family I love them and I love you."

Perkovic said: "I heard gunshots and he hung up. ... He sounded like he was in pain, like he got shot."

Vire, 23, said Poplawski once had an Internet talk show but that it wasn't successful. Vire said Poplawski had an AK-47 rifle and several powerful handguns, including a .357 Magnum.

Another friend, Joe DiMarco, said Poplawski had been laid off from his job at a glass factory earlier this year. DiMarco said he didn't know the name of the company, but knew his friend had been upset about losing his job.

The officers were called to the home in the Stanton Heights neighborhood at about 7 a.m., Richard said.

Tom Moffitt, 51, a city firefighter who lives two blocks away, said he heard about the shooting on his scanner and came to the scene, where he heard "hundreds, just hundreds of shots. And not just once — several times."

Rob Gift, 45, who lives a block away, said he heard rapid gunfire as he was letting his dog out.

He said the neighborhood of well-kept single-family houses and manicured lawns is home to many police officers, firefighters, paramedics and other city workers.

"It's just a very quiet neighborhood," Gift said.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 133 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in 2008, a 27 percent decrease from year before and the lowest annual total since 1960.

The guy said he murdered the police because of the Obama gun ban that will soon come. THANKS TO HIM! He also said he was upset over his job. I pray this SOB rots in the deepest pit of hell. Also, I feel pity for the police and feel they should approach houses with arms in hand. Its unfortunate he had to use an "ASSAULT RIFLE" as they call it and say he did it because of Obama. What a stupid POS.

Oh well this thread will be closed.. Too much bad news.. I know we are in deep Sh*!

To bad he lived. Prayers for the family of fallen officers as this is a tragic day for everyone. I am sure the brady bunch is eating it up.

That is my point; what does this mean for us sensible gun owners?

But you're right, ibtl.

My heart goes out to the officer's families. I'm glad the perp didn't get away. There is a lot of fear out there and there are a lot of people hurting because of the economic situation. I would like to hope that we won't hear of more instances of things like this, but I'm afraid it is going to get worse before it gets better.

And yes, the Brady Bunch is already has this on their webpage. I'm sure it was high fives and champagne corks once they heard the news.

I'm sure I'm paranoid, but why does all of the prose associated with this incident raise my hackles ?
Seems like a "made for VPC" sound bite to me........

We're seeing an increase in reporting of "loonies with a gun" in the MSM, IMO. Lots of "reasons', TBS but the "timing" disturbs me. Its possible the "antis" could encourage this sort of behavoir. >MW

It means that all the wierdos going off about every little hint outta Washington that something MIGHT be under consideration are starting to bear fruit. The people who listen to "chicken littles" are afraid and are starting to act out their fears.

It also adds ammo to the anti-RKBA folks' argument that most people cannot be trusted with firearms.

Actually the RKBA picture is not nearly so bleak as many - including folks here - paint it. In point of fact 1/4th of the Democrats in the House (65)recently sent AG Holder a letter telling him to back off a new AWB. FYI, the Democrat Party majority in the House is far less than 65. Even half that number would make it difficult to pass a new AWB absent a WHOLESALE defection by Republicans.

Things could really be a whole lot worse. Now if we could only get that message out.

My sympathies to the family's of the officers. But this dumb a$$ just gave the anti-gun idiots one more reason to force their anti-gun beliefs onto everyone else.:fire::cuss: I hope this perp gets the full extent of any possible punishment and then burns in heck.

So from what I have read the police were called there on a domestic disturbance complaint. It would be nice to know precisely (as in what the domestic complaint was about )why they came to his house.

Sorry, but his MO sounds so out-there! The burden of proof is on Fox to prove that his fear of a gun-ban was his true MO. BUT if Fox lied about it to sell news, well we have a lot to be pissed about.
(Remember how the media told us that David Koresh was so 'evil' that it warranted burning out children?)

Very sad about to hear about the fallen officers, though.

Another story tells of his mother-in-law hunkered down in the basement of the house the whole time this was going on.

It's a shame this nutjob is going to make it harder on the rest of us.

My prayers go out for the families of the slain officers and the wounded ones as well.

Once again....THR is not a news service where we post every link to every shooting we can find. We discuss shootings here when there is something of interest to the community. This one doesn't meet that criteria. Might be why all the previous threads on this topic have been closed.
