Ohio – In early to mid April Ohio’s Stand Your Ground Law will go into effect. They already had a law but it only covered your home and auto. The law will read you have no duty to retreat in a place you can legally be. The exact date is the 91st day after the bill if filed by the Sec. of State which to our knowledge hasn’t been filed yet. The Governor signed it the 4th of Jan. but the Sec has not filed it yet and it will be some days before that happens.

Montana – HB102 was just introduced and the legislature has passed Permitless Carry in the past only to be vetoed by the Governor. The new Governor has stated he is for Permitless Carry. If you want in my opinion to read a model Permitless Carry Law that removes just about all places off limits and allows campus carry with no restrictions then you need to read the one just introduced in Montana. https://leg.mt.gov/bills/2021/billpdf/HB0102.pdf

Utah also it is talking Permitless Carry and it is not certain but there is a good chance for both states to join all the others and go Permitless Carry. Both will still issue permits to carry for Reciprocity with other states. Do be aware that all states Permitless Carry laws are not equal. Some states have laws that apply differently to those carrying with a Permit than under their Permitless Carry laws. https://www.handgunlaw.us/documents/Permitless_Carry_States.pdf

Utah Permitless Carry Bill https://le.utah.gov/~2021/bills/hbillint/HB0060.pdf

Indiana – Has also had a bill put in for Permitless Carry, HB 1369. No information is available on this bill at this time. I just heard about this bill today. I usually don’t post about bills that have just been filed but three states with having bills in and hearing Montana and Utah have a very good chance of adopting Permitless Carry this year. Time will tell!

Handgunlaw.us – The first of the year we updated the site after verifying every quoted Statute/Admin Rule on the site and that it was the latest version of that Law/Rule. Almost all the quoted States/Rules have something like “Acts 2009, No. 748, § 43; 2013, No. 1089, § 1” or similar at the end of that quoted Statute/Rule. I had over the years had 50 to 60% of them already noted but finally got around to getting them all. This shows the last change in the wording of that Law and makes it easy to see that it is up to date when looking at a states online statutes. Some Statute sources don’t list the changes so we have added a second link to Statutes/Admin Rules to some state pages especially those using Nexis.

Thank you.

Handgunlaw is my favorite reference for a variety of reasons. The pages are uniformly laid out, identical from state-to-state, and links to the state statutes clearly annotated and easy to reference.

I'm big on source data, with my specific engineering and military background. Source data is critical in getting to what the laws actually say. Often times summaries and snippets don't convey the full letter of the law and far too many people rely on such "hearsay" instead of actually reading the statutes themselves. This is not a subject where ignorance will serve you well at all.

If I had any beef at all, it's this:

I cannot, for the life of me, open a link in a separate page/tab from any of handgunlaw's pages. I have no issues with most other sites, so I doubt it's the computers/OS's that I use. I get around it by opening two pages on the site...one so I can read the text on the handgunlaw page and the other so I can go to any link of interest.

Retired USN Chief, First thank you for your service. As for the links you can always try to right click on a link and there will be a menu to open that link in another tab. At least Chrome and Firefox allow me to do that.
Also what you stated about going to source data is the reason Handgunlaw.us is like it is. We were the first to do it and as the old saying goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Others are imitating us. Not as much as giving links to the statutes/Admin Rules etc but adding info on State Parks, Parking Lot Storage Laws etc etc. Those places many of us go but you never saw information about carrying there. I see them even putting their info in the same order as we have it on Handgunlaw.us. Gives me a smile. So try the right click. You can also go into your settings and see if you can make all links open in a new tab. I am not a computer geek. I know just enough to get into trouble.

I've tried all these...SHIFT/link, CTRL/link, and right click/open new tab.

IE and Chrome both won't let me do it. And that's with any device I've tried.

It's a head scratcher, for sure.

BUT...in the grand scheme of things, pretty mild. So I don't worry about it too much.

OK...update.

I SWEAR I COULD NEVER GET THE LINKS TO OPEN IN NEW TABS/WINDOWS BEFORE! HONEST!

But now it's working, just like for most every other site.

I'll just crawl into my corner and be happy.

'Chief, as a tech guy, I can't tell you the number of times that kind of stuff has happened, to me and people who've asked me for help.
"IT WASN'T WORKING BEFORE! BUT YOU SHOWED UP AND NOW IT IS!!!"
I have magic powers. :D
Actually, I believe tech knows i'm coming, and is afraid of me... I carry a Percussive Persuasion Device in my tool bag. :D

I've been known to call my boss over.

BOSS: What do you need?

ME: Just stand there. I'm having problems with this program and now that you're here I expect it to start working. Ahhh... there it goes! Thanks!

BOSS: *rolls his eyes* If I didn't know exactly what you mean, I'd be upset.
