I got a job doing private security but I have to take the CCW class this weekend. Has anyone on here from Ohio been thru the course? If so, how hard is it?

If you are currently a shooter you will probably not find it hard. The classroom session will most likely be a review of what you already know, with the possible exception of the legal aspects of using a weapon. The range session is at relatively close range. Some trainers work in a little extra range time too.

Where are you taking your training?

I am taking it out at Scarlet Oaks. I'm really looking forward to it. Do you know how long it takes to get your permit?

The course is not standardized AFAIK, so just ask your trainer what the course entails.

Don't know where Scarlet Oaks is right off hand. Here is a link that may help: http://ccwhen.com/devlog.php
Select the county you will be applying in, and you can see the average wait for your CCW.

Here is another link for the Ohio Attorney General's website with info about Ohio CCW. http://www.ag.state.oh.us/le/prevention/concealcarry/index.asp
You may want to look at the link titled "Concealed Carry Training Fact Sheet".

And another link for Ohioan's for Concealed Carry: http://www.ofcc.net/

Actually one PART of the course is standardized, the legal part. That's contained in a booklet published by the AG's office. You can get printed copies or download it from the State of Ohio website. That part has to be taught either by a cop or an attorney. I'd find a course where that part is taught by the latter.

I've had my Ohio permit since they were legal.

The classroom work is common sense. They'll cover "this is a gun" type stuff. The legal aspect is fairly basic, reinforcing the fact that Ohio is a Duty to Retreat state. In other words, don't shoot if you can get away. Kinda logical choice anyway, in my opinion. After reading the pamphlet, hearing the lesson in class and reading the O.R.C. on line, it's pretty much straight foreward except for the "plain sight" requirement in a vehicle.

If you're going to an established school, you'll get more. If you're going to one of the newly spawned "Get Your CCW Here" places, expect to walk away disappointed but legal. Takes about a month to get your permit after dropping off the paperwork at the Sherrifs department.

The Ohio CCW class can be pretty much summed up as the NRA handgun course. Plus the Attorney Generals pamphlet and then range time. The shooting is done at 7 yards at a paper plate. Not very challenging, but since most defensive shootings take place at conversational distance or 7 yards that is why they settled on this distance. You will use 100 rounds. I hope you will enjoy the course. Try to stay focused as covering the basic stuff and be a little tedious and boring for those of us who have been shooting awhile. You have to remember there will be a few in the class who have never used a handgun before. I sat next to a baptist minister in my class who was using a jamamatic. The instructor was a friend of mine who knew I had quite a bit of experience with semi autos and so he allowed me to teach the fellow how to deal with clearing malfunctions, so that he could focus on the other students. Not sure if he was limpwristing it or it was the gun. But the .45 ball ammo should not have been chocking it so much. It was a Taurus PT145 Millenium .45 acp.... I hope it is a better pistol than it appeared to be that day.

Anyways you should not find the class difficult and you can use what ever type of handgun you want. A number of people used .38s,9mm,.40S&W and .45acps in my class. I used a Walther P22. I saw no good reason to use $10 to $20 of ammo to shoot a paper plate at 7 yards...If I am shooting centerfire handguns I am shooting at 20+ yards... The Walther worked out quite well.

+ 1 on the NRA basic pistol course. If you can read and comprehend, you can pass the classroom. If you ever shot a handgun, you can pass the 15 ft. range test.

Paul, if you can wait just a few weeks, my partner and I will be throwing a class in Clermont County off Wards Corner Rd @ I275. We've got a Harvard Educated attorney on staff, and really know our stuff. Seriously, you can write me at [email protected] if you want more.

I can endorse Collin as a very competent instructor. He is also one of the hard working folks at BFA who protect our firearm rights in Ohio. It would be worth your wait. ;) Tim

Collin, I would wait but I actually got a job working private security for Carl Lindner and family. So I signed up for Scarlet Oaks vocational so I could get the ball rolling quicker for me to start my new job. I really really appreciate all this information guys.
