Just saw a story on this one on TV. Time to call the legislature. Note the misinformation regarding the age for firearms. I'd expect better from Fox.

Mayor Wants Law Banning Anyone Under 21 From Possessing Firearm

CLEVELAND -- Mayor Frank Jackson wants the Ohio General Assembly to pass legislation prohibiting anyone under age 21 from possessing a firearm.

Jackson made the proposal at a news conference Monday following the death of 12-year-old Asteve'e "Cookie" Thomas, who was hit by a stray bullet from a street gunfight as she walked to a corner store on Sept. 1.

"Right now, if a young person was walking down any Ohio street brandishing an assault weapon, the police could not arrest him for that," Jackson said in a statement.

Ohio law says that no one under 18 is permitted to purchase a firearm. A person must be at least 21 to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Jackson cited city police statistics showing that, from 2004 to 2006, 70 percent of those arrested for crimes involving firearms were under age 28.

James Yhonquea, 20, of Cleveland, has been arrested and charged with aggravated murder in Thomas' death and a warrant has been issued for a second suspect, Eric Romel Wilson, 35.

After reading the article and catching the tv segment, I feel it my duty to inform you of several mistakes, and urge a retracton or corection in further stories based on this.

This is incorrect. Brandishing a firearm is a crime. Carrying one is not. the difference is that Brandishing is an action that poses direct risk, or implies direct threats upon someone. It is legal to carry a firearm loaded and chambered, so long as it is slung or holstered, and not being used to intentionaly threaten or intimidate someone.

This is also incorrect. State (and federal) law states that a person 18yrs or older may purchase a Long-Gun (rifle, carbine, or shotgun). State law prohibits the purchasing of a handgun by anyone under 21.

Neither of these is considered an "assault weapon" by BATFE or the FBI, by definition.

Gang crime is directly responsible for most of these stats, and by definition, they are criminals. The sales or possession restriction of long-guns (which is the only category affected under 21) will do nothing to curb gang activity, as they don't care. Most use handguns, which the under 21(the larger group in the statistic) are already prohibited from purchasing.

Many adults 18-21 live in areas that require the protection a firearm can provide in the home. Should they be denied this protection on the basis that gang members want to kill each other, and worse, innocent public?

There are many details on both sides of this topic, please make sure you provide ALL of the facts to your viewing public.

Please correct the information in your telecasts to address the misinformation this article is spreading.

Jesse is walking down a slippery slope. If he wants to legislate against certain groups (in this case age) using crime stats, the stats could further be broken down by race, income, etc. This is age profiling I guess.

This wasn't Jesse Jackson. No one in Ohio cares what he says. This was Frank Jackson, Mayor of Cleveland, and one of Bloomberg's Coalition of Concerned Mayors, or whatever the name is.

Cleveland has waaayy too much crime, way too few police/fire/EMS people, no money and rotten schools.

And Mayor Frankie is wasting a bunch of City money with a stupid court challenge to the "pre-emption" clause of the recently amended CCW law.

Jackson acts like Cleveland is running a SURPLUS.

When he loses his behind in court and has to start laying cops off again, he's done.

Believe it or not, there's a consensus in NE Ohio that criminals are bad people and that bad things should happen to them. When a juvenile armed robber out on probation was recently shot to death trying to rob someone on his own front lawn, the general reaction was, "Bet he won't do THAT again." The ONLY people who found fault in anyone besides the deceased robber, Arthur Buford, were his mutant family and fellow thugs.

The problem is that you're asking them to correct mistakes they didn't make. You're mostly referring to quotes of what Jackson said. He said what he said, and Fox can't alter it without being guilty of misquoting him. Also, their statement about the minimum ages for purchasing firearms was, while perhaps not complete, technically correct.

Hmmm, pehaps taking the Mayor's logic another full step is appropriate as a way to teach him a lesson in civil rights. The legislation can be more narrowly tailored. Perhaps just a ban on young African-Americans possessing firearms?

Wonder what the ACLU would think of that?

Mr. Mayor, there are young men 17 to 20 carrying guns everyday in Iraq and Afghanistan in the uniform of your nation. If you have a crime problem, that is YOUR problem, not the good people of Ohio, whatever their race. Leave the good people alone and punish the bad.

Michael Bloomberg's coalition of mayors, having confessed their incompetence to direct the governance of the cities that elected them, are reduced to the last resort of all scoundrels: pointing the finger at others for creating the problems they can't solve.

They can learn a lot from Mayor Fenty of Washington, D.C. The District of Columbia has all the gun control laws any of those mayors could want. That's why the little District has a higher percentage of violent crimes than any state in the nation. My guess is that Mayor Jackson is jealous of Mayor Fenty and has ambitions for Cleveland to beat the District.
