Alright guys, theres been a huge drama fest over Ohio Rapid Fire for the past few months in regards to some complaints about the long term of these receivers. I don't know if I can link to the forum in question but, mods please edit it if it's against the rules.

http://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27159&page=1&pp=35

There is about 6 pages worth of complaints which seem to be very valid. Todd has responded on a few occasions and it is well known that Century does build on the receivers. ORF also builds guns on the receivers.

The main concerns have been documented mainly by Galil builders. Currently there are 2 major builders that are no longer doing builds, AZEX ARMS and Arizona Response Systems. Both have been very critical, AZEX mainly claiming that the receiver does not slap together with the IMI parts like a regular receiver and that it is out of spec. He has also claimed that the laser lines up but the gun is shooting too far to the right or left.

Todd's response? That sometimes builders end up bending the barrel when fitting the gas block causing it to be inaccurate. AZEX now refuses to do builds on ORF receivers or with green mountain barrels.

Arizona Response Systems, gunplumber will no longer do builds, my guess is he is concerned from a legal aspect and does not want to be held liable. I can't really blame him. He has done reviews on the receiver and notices that the bolt lugs are infact too far back (or I guess sometimes too far forward). This causes the bolt to only contact one side of the receiver. Some builders have mentioned that you can remove material from the bolt lug recesses or ground down on it though that isn't recommended, and even Todd at ORF has said not to ground down on the receivers. Todd's response to this is that the receiver is "seating it's self in".

Other complaints that have come up are loss of headspace. I'm not sure what would cause this but I'm sure this is a large safety issue?

Heat treating, there is question as to if the receivers are too soft or too hard, apparently being too soft is bad as it's causing the ejector to mushroom according to some of the forum members. I do not know what this "mushrooming" is. Angela has mentioned that some receivers that she engraves are very easy and soft, others are so hard her tools break. I've also heard being too hard is bad as it can cause cracks. Todd has responded that his heat treat specs are the same as IMI's which appear to be 40-45RC.

One thing is for sure, my builder is now very concerned about liability (and again I can't blame them either) and will cease Galil builds until they know more about the receiver.

I've emailed Todd on more than one occasion in regards to if there were any safety problems regarding the bolt lug recesses or heat treating. He didn't seem to directly answer the question, just "how did your builder fix the problem?"

As a consumer, I am very concerned in regards to some of the reports on the forums about these receivers. I've been trying to remain as neutral as possible and research into older receivers if anyone has had any issues? I am glad Todd stepped up to the plate to even build Galil receivers as it gives me a cost effective Galil, but now I am seriously concerned about the long term or the safety of the receiver. As much as I would like to say I 100 percent trust ORF and that there are still people building them, I feel the list of Galil builders is narrowing and this is disturbing in it's self.

I do not want to cause any harm to Todd's business for potential customers (though I doubt that considering the success with Century building Galils on his receiver), but I do want some information from people who own these Galils or have had a Galil built on the ORF receiver as to if they have had any serious issues? How many rounds have you shot? Have you noticed a loss of headspace?

Thanks.

Well, using Century as a reference on an item that has questionable quality isn't really saying anything. Century is known to have different views on 'qualty' than others.

Quite a lot of the Cetme rifles they built had parts that were ground to give "within operating tolerance" measurements. You'll find many Cetme owners that have had the ends ground on their bolt carriers and the bolts ground so that 'headspace checks' pass.

I am not going to say anything about ORF and their policies, but I do suggest you search more than AKFiles for posts on this subject.

I suspect you'll find interesting reading.

Thanks for the response. I've done some research on AZEX forums, Uzitalk, gunsnet, what i've read here on THR, survivalboards, and AKforum.

Generally, Uzitalk has less complaints. I will post a review on mine when I get it back.

ya im 2 pages in and serious warning flags are up

Mfg unwilling to adress specific questions, serial numbers, etc.

lots of name calling and seems to be 3 camps the
"they suck"
the
"they can be ok"
or the
"th3y are g@wd!11!1!1!"

i donno what other optiones are around for Galill's but id try to avoid these

Yes there are some...trolls that ruin the thread but I would like to hear from more builders who are successful and their views about this. My builder basically told me to not worry about the internet stuff as some of it was true while the rest was just BS. The guy that pm'ed me is a coworker of his though and notified me that they were no longer doing builds until they could find out more about the receivers and the long term.

I just waded through the entire AKfiles thread (PHEW!!) and it makes me remember why I love THR so much!

But, the problem at hand seems to be an interesting one and made more confusing by the curious refusal to answer some basic questions by the manufacturer of the receivers.

The right locking lug was moving and changing headspace on a rifle. The heat-treatment of the receiver was questioned. MANY pages later, a semi-answer delivered with indications that the OUTSIDE of the receiver was in spec. What about the actual lugs INSIDE??? No answer.

And, it was mentioned by several respondents that their bolt was only making contact on the RIGHT LUG!! Well.....that could be a major contributor here too. Even if the metalurgy was spot on, the fact that one lug is carrying the whole load will cause it to do things it shouldn't in a short time.

Something other than the receiver could be responsible for the ill-fitting bolt and I don't blame ORF for being defensive...but I also would have answered the questions about the heat-treatment straight up. If we hadn't been actually testing each receiver (which looks to be the case to me), an admittance of such with remedial action would have been the better course of action.

And, it seems that they are heat-treating the entire receiver rather than just the high-load areas inside....like most manufacturers would do. This could also be causing some grief and I would not really trust a reading on the outside to reflect the hardness of the lug on the inside. If done properly, it might be so....but, until the cause of the moving headspace is identified....the speculation will continue.

Please keep us posted about your endeavours Pilman and good luck to you!

Right, Todd claims that on the original Galil, the bolt isn't supposed to contact both sides either. I'm not sure what he means by the bolt "seating it's self in". I really hope I don't have any problems long term.

I got my Galil last Friday. I haven't shot it yet but my builder shot about 35 rounds through it and said the wear patterns looked normal. I'll be shooting it next week hopefully. How can one tell if a receivers not heattreated?

Pilman,
You've got a year warranty on the sucker! Put a couple thousand rounds through it and let us know if you have problems. Other posters have as much a 2000 rounds with no issues. Galils, you gotta love 'em! Here's mine.
