I have very limited experience with AR15. Basically I shot M16A2 few times.
I know the THEORY on how it works (gas system with no piston).
I do have a few questions:
1) If I have a lower receiver for 308, can I attach uppers/barrel assembly in other calibers (6.8, 5.56, 243) and still have it work. If so, what else do I need to replace. If the whole deal is having a modular weapon, how exactly does it work? Do I just swap the upper receiver/barrel assembly & recoil springs or what? How do I modify magazine well?
2) Just how good are DPMS. The reason I am asking is because they offer Chrome lined heavy barrels in 20" and even longher lengh in MANY calibers (308, .223, 5.56NATO, 7.62x39Russian, 243 Remington, 6.8SPC).
3) is wooden furniture available for AR15? The reason I am asking is that I preffere wooden furniture to plastic crap. It may be heavier, but it feels better and is sturdier/heavier. Heavier weapon = lower recoil.
4) Is it true that should 1022 pass the ban will be only on LOWER receivers, and not on uppers/barrel assembleys.
5) As far as AR180B. I like the price. Does anyone makes heavy "target" barrels for those?
6) My biggest beef with ARs are their "dioptric" sights (peephole + post). Old style sights (plank & post) available for those? I am just more used to them.

Please, forgive my ignorance. WHile I can dissassemble AK, SKS, and Saiga blindfolded, I have never, ever dealt with ARs other then shooting it. And I HATED the sights on it too.

So, what do they mean by "modularity"

If I have a 308 lower receiver, what upper receivers/barrel assembleys can I attach to it? I would like MAXIMUM flexibility, and an ability to use as many different rounds as possible.

Thank.

Sorry, misread.

The .308 receiver is pretty limited. The marketing for "modular" really only applies to the 5.56 size lower. Many choices there that you listed.

I think if you really want a .308 "MBR" there are better choices than the AR design.

there are two size lower receivers

the AR15 (223) size and the AR10 (308) size. the calibers that you can use are restricted by the OAL (over all length) of the parent cartridge. If you go with a 308 lower, then you will use uppers for the 308 family and some of the WSM calibers, such as 243, 260, 308, and the wsm's. Check out DPMS's website.

If you go with the AR15 lower, then you have the 223, 6.8, 7.62x39, 6.5 Grendel, the 50beowulf, and other cartridges of that length. You also then have some pistol calibers like 9mm.

wood stocks

Yes, I JT custom rifles makes a thumbhole laminated wood stock, but I am not sure about the hand guards. If you don't like the "cheap plastic" check out the Magpul line. They are still synthetic, but are very, very heavy duty.

Ammo issue.

The main thing for me was using many types of ammo. Namely 243 WIN, especially since I found some non corrosive Wolf ammo. 6.8 SPC and 6.5x39 (Grendel) remain VERY expensive. 260 is also not very common. The main idea was to use 243 for a higher power rounda and 5.56NATO for a lower power round. Since I can't do it with the same receiver - back to the drawing board for me:)

DPMS lower

since i have a dpms lower, how difficult it is to change to the other .223 length calibers?

4) Is it true that should 1022 pass the ban will be only on LOWER receivers, and not on uppers/barrel assembleys.Yes

No.

HR1022 would ban more than just lowers. For example, it also bans barrel shrouds, as well as "conversion kits" which are defined as:

...any part or combination of parts designed and intended for use in converting a firearm into a semiautomatic assault weapon, and any combination of parts from which a semiautomatic assault weapon can be assembled if the parts are in the possession or under the control of a person.

So it bans all parts which can be used to assemble a prohibited gun.

No one makes any aftermarket barrels for the 180b as far as I know, and Armalite doesn't offer anything other than the stock barrel. Thats my pet peeve about this gun, it could be so good if there were other barrel options like carbine length, heavy target or chrome lined.

I don't know if the problem is that no aftermarket manufacturer has thought there is enough of a market, or possibly it is not a modular design so that barrels could be changed easily.

DPMS offers wooden buttstocks and pistol grips for the AR series.

D.S.A. Inc. had some pistol grips and carbine length handguards available in walnut too.
.308 AR rifles are just as modular as .223 AR rifles just on a larger scale, think .260 Remington, .243 Winchester, .338 Federal,,,,, .223 uppers will not interchange with a .308 lower or vice versa.

Wolf Gold ammo is also available for the 6.5 Grendel at $9.97/box of 20. People shooting it are getting 1.5 MOA on average and it looks to be a good round for hunting.

R33...How easy?

since i have a dpms lower, how difficult it is to change to the other .223 length calibers?

First always make sure that the weapon is clear, then follow the step by step guide.

Step 1: Pull 2 pins
Step 2: Remove 223 upper
Step 3: Drop on new upper (6.5 Grendel:D )
Step 4: Push in 2 pins
Step 5: Lock and Load
Step 6: Shoot and Grin

Have other calibers?

Repeat as needed

DPMS 308

As for my opinion on DPMS 308 I purchase a DPMS LR308 with 24 in. bull barrel and it is extremely accurate it is heavy but good for long range at 100 yards you can group at 1-2 group easy - at 50yrds. you can put it through same hole over and over which is easy at 50yrds at 200-500 it still is accurate with less than 4 inch groups the lr308 was in the NRA best cat. last year I would highly recc. this gun
