On the XD, I like the "chambered" and "cocked" indicators that you can examine by touch.

The XD holster and mag holder are pretty decent for freebies, but at least for the holster you'll most likely want to upgrade at some point. I have the Serpa for OWB and the Comp-Tac M-TAC for IWB and both work well for me.

I would definitely want to try out any of these .40S&W pistols before I bought one - skeeter_08

If all other factors are equal in your mind, the reason I voted for the Glock is maintenance. All factory parts needed to keep the gun running are available from many 'net sources. A $25 book is all you need to learn what to do. The Glock sight tool is needed to change the sights. The other guns probably need more tools and some additional training. The Glock parts are reasonably priced.

New Glocks have a loaded chamber indicator on the extractor. Works fine by touch in the dark.

What happens if your non-Glock breaks in the middle of the zombie apocalypse? The factory won't be open....

i voted the xd although I agree the styer should be looked at. My styer is one of the best shooting 40's I have.

You can't go wrong with either the M&P or the XD. Probably comes down to price and how each of these feel in your hand.

i rented the styer and it just didnt feel right in my hand and it looks wierd. i did alot of research into it, and apparently it was a glock designer and he offered it to glock but they didnt want it so he sold it to styer.

id really like an actual safety but you dont see a whole lot of polymer guns with actual safties they are all built into the trigger which i guess isnt too bad but id still like one

the xd get a +1 for the grip safety

the xds factory holster is just a plus for a little while if im putting down 500+ on a pistol it will be a little while before i buy a holster

the glock gets a plus since i have friends and family with glock so i wouldnt have to buy things like a sight tool

they will all be the standard sized models since ccw wont be a primary use while im in college, the pistol will be on target and night stand duty

if i buy the glock i will be putting a an extended mag release and slide release since i noticed they were a bit tough to reach without altering hol i was holding the gun not an issue with the xd or the m&p

If you're looking for a .40, I don't know why you would consider an XD, and not an XD(M).

I know a couple of folks who have traded from a glock 22 to a 19 due to cost and general comfort while shooting. Since you reload it on some level negates that but consider shooting both the 22 and 19 if you go glock. No one I know has ever recommended a sigma so I have never tried them. I have tried one of these and it is very nice to shoot. I have a couple of cz in 9mm and .22lr and they all rock.

good cat the xdm add about $100 to the price tag for 4 extra rounds and back straps

i liek how the xd fits my hand so the backstraps dont matter to me and 12 rounds is enough for me to be happy with so i dont see the point in paying $100 extra

I would go with the M&P.

It is the only weapon of the group that was designed and built originally to be a 40 S&W.

That is one of my criteria for any fighting weapon. Choose it in the caliber it was originally designed and built in.

Actually rather simple when you think about it.

Go figure.

M&P BABY!

If you don't mind spending the money I would say get the M&P over the Sigma. I have a Sigma, my buddy just got a M&P. They improved everything about the sigma except the glock breakdown mechanism. If money is tight go with the Sigma it is a good gun. All of those are good guns and you will likely be happy with either. I voted M&P.

DAdams oooo im gonna have to go rent an xd and an M&P then do a side by side comparison of the two i think those are the two its coming down to

to get one witht he thumb safety will it have to be special ordered? it says its optional so it sounds like i would have to have the shop order one

i have shot and or owned all the models that you ask about. currently i have a 23 and a sa xd service model in .40. there is no other handgun that i shoot better, have more confidence in, and love as much as my xd, it is reliable as can be and after 13,000rds it has more than proven itself.

the glock is nice, and it is accurate and reliable, i own one, and reccomend them, but for me personally the xd fits me better.

the sigmas are good for the money.

the m&p's are nice too it really comes down to what you like best.

i say go the xd route and never look back.

Try 'em all, many times. Determine which one best fits your hand and eye. Then try it again, and again, and again. And then and only then should you buy that gun.

What could be more simple than that?

And, if none of them seem like the right fit, try the "other" in your poll for good measure.

The last thing you want to do is take the advice of even the well-meaning folks on a gun forum to make that call for you. It's something that only you and you alone can do.

i voted glock but would definitely consider 10mm since you reload
glock 29 or 20
another interesting choice.

i tried the px4 wasnt a fan

and i try to stay away from H&K i used a p2000 it was nice but wasnt worth the cash

While the Glock may not be the most exciting or the most unique of your choices, it is the universal standard of American law enforcement for a reason. It functions flawlessly, the ergonomics are pretty good, and there are plenty of cheap parts and accessories available. Its been tried and tested for nearly thirty years and its shown to be a winner. The other three have been on the market for less than a decade.

Ditto last post! Glock magazines are better and cheaper than the others, but if you buy something else get the M&P or maybe the Walther P99... H&K USP?
XD is a good but ugly (IMO) pistol, XD not sexy pistol, CZ sexy pistol.

Sometimes people will put down other guns in favor of what they own.

Well, I'm not in a position to say I've shot all of your proposed options. I'm sure there are advocates for each of them.

What I will say is that I recently purchased a SA XD45 Service and I love it.

Despite all the super reliability claims, I had some minor issues with FTFs. It was not the weapon. Shooting a bunch of Wolf and not cleaning the mags was my fault. Even with that, I didn't have a problem until I was 200 rounds into a shooting session.

I'll trust the XD with my life for a HD and carry piece and I'm planning on buying two more in 45. Just clean the mags. It's simple, easy, and you might be surprised at the gunk you'll find after shooting some cheap ammo.

I've shot the S&W Sigma in a 9 and didn't care for the trigger pull, exceptionally long IMO. Have also shot S&W M&P in both 40 and 45, the M&P series does feel very improved over the Sigma, so if you were down to those two I would say the M&P would be worth the extra money. I have only held XD's and Glocks, they didn't appeal to me, but everyone is different. Really doubt that you will have any problems either way you go. Good luck with your purchase and wish you even more luck in your search for ammo :uhoh:

Glock, XD, M&P. All great guns. Pick the one that points and feels the best. For me, that was the M&P, but I wouldn't hesitate at any of these choices.
