Shotgun blast kills teen in hunting accident
Oct 24, 2005, 11:39 AM

TULSA, Okla. -- A teenage boy died after he was injured by a shotgun blast in a hunting accident in Cherokee County.

Authorities say 14-year-old Coty Evans died after a shotgun a friend was carrying accidentally discharged, striking him in the upper shoulder.

Cherokee County Sheriff's Department investigator Becky Thompson says the incident occurred on Friday northeast of Hulbert, just outside of the city limits.

Coty, his brother, and a female cousin, all teenagers, were walking with another boy when the shotgun discharged.

Thompson says the boy was holding a 20-gauge shotgun diagonally in front of Coty while walking through high weeds and brush. She says he was using the butt of his gun to move weeds when the gun accidentally discharged.

...and another in KY

Teen killed by shotgun blast

LEBANON, Ky. A 17-year-old Washington County High School senior is dead the result of an accidental discharge from a shotgun.

Lebanon police say the teenager was waiting on 18-year-old Dylan O'Daniel yesterday afternoon at a gas station when he asked to see a 12-gauge shotgun in O'Daniel's truck.

Police say that when O'Daniel handed the gun to the teen, it fired and the blast struck the boy in the neck. He died at Springview Hospital in Lebanon.

The name of the victim was not released. There was no indication that charges would be filed. The victim and O'Daniel were residents of Lebanon. The incident occurred at Langford's B-P.

Why do we have children walking around with loaded weapons that do not know basic weapons safety. I place blame on the parents. :banghead: :barf: :cuss:

Can assign blame to whoever you like. But its the dead kid who does the dieing. That suggest to me that he has a vested interest in the affair, and the largest stake means the largest responsibility.

Might feel good to blame other people, but it's either pointless or counterproductive.

Basic weapons safety does need to be taught, to learn properly. But realizing that you never want to be in front of the muzzle does not need to be taught. Even dogs can learn that a firearm shoots stuff where it is pointed. Dogs.

If you are with people who point muzzles at you, or any reason, get away. At the very least physically act to move yourself away from the muzzle, or the muzzle away from you, or both.

...Or you could bunch up and walk real close to the guy who's pointing the muzzle at you and smacking the butt on the ground.

i think the point is to make sure we teach our youth to know basic weapons safety
I always thought every kid should go to a gun safety coarse because at some point they are prob. going to be around a gun.
It is sad to hear of such stories

Roger that. My ex hunting buddy was bad about doing that to me. Emphasis on EX.

My uncle knew a guy who was a great hunter, great outdoorsman, great guy to take out to the wilderness. The best. Except on a rafting trip they were floating down the stream the the guy traveresed his muzzle across my uncle twice. He was asked not to do it after the first time, and after the second time he was never asked to come out again.

THAT's the standard I aspire to.

Yikes. Last range trip there were a few good ol' boys plinking away and one swept me point blank with finger on trigger.

Now I'm pretty patient to a fault, but after reading these stories maybe I'll just hit the deck from now on.

The boy that was shot was a class mate of my daugther. It has up set her and the other kids in school . He was well liked by everyone.

why the hell was this idiot carrying around a chambered shotgun?

i know some people believe in carrying chambered, but that's ccw and even in that scenario i'm of two minds.

but why would you carry a shotgun on a truck rack chambered? that just sounds like a recipie for all sorts of trouble.

and don't say, "it's for that one in a million shot that runs across the road while you are driving", etc.

because that kind of "shoot it quick" thinking often results in accidents where people mistake ppl in brown for brown bear, etc... those who have read ayoob et al stuff on the brain confusing the eye will know what i mean.

I had a friend of a friend, along with my friend, accompany me on a day hunt for deer. Crossing fences (legally) he waved the muzzle about. I tried to correct his behavior but he was such a yahoo that I focused more on being shot by him than on the hunting. I told my friend to NEVER invite him along on another hunting trip. .22s for rabbits, .270 for deer, he was just always a classic hunting slob, so I heard later. Liked to pop off at everthing but what he was supposed to be after. A real idiot. My friend, many years later, thanked me for having taught him the same rigoruous safety rules that I'd learned from my father. It was a total surprise, as I'd had no memory of teaching him anything about gun safety! But I do remember that he never went hunting with that guy, alone, again.
