OK. Super Dumb Question About CMP

So if I wanted to order a CMP Garand, would this be all I need?

Proof of membership in the Texas State Rifle Association, and proof of "Completion of a Hunter Safety Course that included live fire training."

Is it really that easy? Just Xerox copies of the above membership and certification cards?

garrett1955, I have no arguement with your viewpoint, but please understand that while both the M1 Garand and M1 Carbine are both very cool rifles, neither as they come from CMP will be new. They are however new to us. They will be functioning. Many many Garands are quite accurate. I don't have a frame of reference on Carbines other than my Grandpa always spoke highly of the ones he carried in France and Belgium.

Getting a Garand from the CMP couldn't be easier.

On about January 2 or so, I mailed the following to the CMP:
A copy of my DD214 (satifies the marksmanship requirement)
A copy of my birth certificate (satisfies the proof of age requirement)
A copy of my range membership card (satisfies the 'CMP Affiliated Organization' requirement)
The filled out CMP order form. Don't forget to get that one page notarized. My bank did it for free, no problems.
My payment information.

On Feb 6, Mr. FedEx man brought me a long cardboard box with a Field Grade Greek return M1 in it. The wood is a little on the, um, distressed side, but the metal is in very good shape.

My mistake was not ordering any ammo at the same time, so I now have to wait for my case of Greek M2 Ball (in enbloc clips) to arrive before the first dance. Not a big deal, however, since it has given me the time to learn the inner workings of the rifle first.

Ironically, the same day my rifle was delivered, the CMP put up a note that all of the Greek field grades were gone. Man, am I glad I didn't wait any longer to place my order.

Get one while you can. I will be getting a M1 Carbine also, just as soon as they become available.

mustanger98 I am tempted to buy one of the rack grade Garands. They are sprinfields. I think everyone should have a Garand in their collection, and this would be a great way for me to add one to mine. Ever since I took a look at my friends I've had the thought in the back of my mind. I never wanted to drop 1000 on one though. So 300-500 might not be such a bad idea. Would being involved in the (FCSA) Fifty Cal shooters asso. count as one of the marksmenship programs?

Yeah, me too. I hear they're a lot better than it seems they should be.

Me Neither.

So 300-500 might not be such a bad idea.

My Garand is a 2.3million Springfield which dates to Dec.'43... Danish Service Grade from that last time they had those. It cost me $400 +shipping. It turned out pretty nice and shoots good too. But like I said, those Rack Grades I hear about turn out a lot better than CMP lets on. Depending on how the deals go, I'm half a mind to get one of the woodless RG's... they're Springfield and they're supposedly Danish returns too.

Would being involved in the (FCSA) Fifty Cal shooters asso. count as one of the marksmenship programs?

I don't know if they're affiliated. I was a GCA member... now with Georgia Sport Shooting Association. They're both affiliated.

'nother question

Does my range need to be a CMP range, or will being a member of any range do?

Thanks.

The club/range where I did my 50rds qual is not a CMP affiliated club. However, several of the officers at the gun club are also top officers in GSSA which I mentioned in my last post, as well as them being service rifle competitors. The point is not whether or not your local range is a CMP affiliate so much as are you a member of any organization that is an affiliate.

GCA is an affiliate you can hold membership in to qualify, but they're not a range. But, you can also belong to a CMP affiliated club that does have a range. It works either way, so long as you can satisfy the marksmanship requirement.

Mustanger,

Thanks...

That was a little unclear from the website. I only ask because the ranges around here are a pain in the butt to join and very expensive.

Thanks for the info
