WALTERS, Okla. (AP) _ An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper was shot and killed Friday morning after pulling over a car just north of the Texas border, and authorities were searching for a suspect, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said.

The trooper had informed his dispatcher about 7 a.m. that he was pulling over a suspicious vehicle on the north side of Devol, about five miles north of the Texas state line, OSBI spokeswoman Jessica Brown said.

The Highway Patrol then lost radio contact with the trooper. A Cotton County sheriff's deputy and another trooper went to investigate and found the body alongside a rural county road about a mile from U.S. 70.

Highway Patrol spokesman Chris West identified the slain trooper as Nikky Green, 35. Green graduated from the OHP academy six years ago. He was on patrol without a partner, as is typical.

West described the suspect in the shooting as being in his mid-20s to early-30s, 5-foot-11 to 6-foot-3, 210 pounds to 230 pounds, short dark hair and wearing glasses, a black leather, waist-length jacket and camouflage pants.

He was believed to be driving a small, white four-door car, similar to a Nissan or a Toyota. The license plate of the car was apparently obscured.

A major search was under way.

``We've got increased law enforcement presence here,'' West said. ``We've got deputies from other counties and troopers here from Texas. We're definitely looking for this vehicle.''

The Texas Department of Public Safety was monitoring traffic on the Red River bridges on Interstate 44 and U.S. 70.

``They're checking folks out and seeing if there's somebody who may know something,'' said Texas DPS spokeswoman Tela Mange.

Brown said at least some of the suspect and vehicle information is believed to have come from Green's in-car camera.

``We consider the suspect armed and very dangerous,'' Brown said. ``He has no qualms about shooting anyone else. He's got to know law enforcement is after him at this point.''

We had a slightly better description, but that was basically it. About 0900 hrs yesterday, it just wouldn't do to be caught driving one of those with OK plates on the Interstate yesterday with any kind of violation observable. We all were looking for that guy.

One article said that he lost radio contact after calling in that he was stopping a suspicious vehicle. I don't know if this means he was out of radio range or just quit talking to deal with the car he stopped. If he was out of radio range, that's a disgrace. As an Oklahoma taxpayer, I would be happy to pay whatever my share of the costs might be to make sure our troopers have radio coverage in 100% of the state.

I've also quail hunted in that part of the state, and it is indeed full of unusual types. But the fact that the license plate was obscured (looked like mud in the picture) makes it sound like someone on the run. If you want more about what it's like down there, there's a good book called Red River Prosecutor, by a guy who was later an appeals court judge, about life in Love County, which is not too far away.

I don't know what the status is of radio coverage for OK, is, but 100% coverage just isn't practically doable unless you have Bill Gate's budget and no regulatory constraints.

"Lost radio contact" probably means that he didn't check in within a reasonable time after making the stop, and then didn't respond to calls. IOW, "lost radio contact" in this situation probably means he was dead, rather than being a radio problem. He was STOPPED, after all.

Sad day, anyway, and I hope they get him soon. Good time to bring back public hanging.

At the very least they have his plates and some camera footage. That's a good start towards catching that scumbag.

I spent several years in Oklahoma . I have a lot of respect for those troopers who go at it alone.

A different perspective towards losing a LEO when there is a picture to go with it. May he rest in peace.

A bitter, stinkin' shame.

Someone posted a front page from the Duncan newspaper on a bulletin board here in our sheriff's office. Apparently Trooper Nickky Green was not only a good cop and family man, but an all around member of the community, enthusiastic church man, and youth booster as well.

another okie - - I've read Red River Prosecutor - - Another deputy loaned it to me while I was cooped up in hospital a few years ago. It was a very good read, and I've been looking for a copy of my own ever since. My Dad, born a Texan, grew up in Ryan, Jefferson County, and I've hunted rabbit, quail, and dove around there quite a bit.

Best,
Johnny

A man arrested by authorities investigating the shooting death of an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper remains in custody on drug charges. Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Jessica Brown declined to say if Rick Ray Malone of Duncan is a suspect in the death of trooper Nikky Green or if he`s being questioned about the shooting.

Malone was arrested yesterday afternoon and authorities searched his home last night. A dispatcher at the Stephens County jail says drug possession charges have been lodged against Malone. No bond is set though.

Police have been searching for a white, 1989 Geo Spectrum used by the suspect in the trooper`s death. The car`s tag number is SVX 697. Green was shot to death early Friday while checking reports of a suspicious vehicle on a rural Cotton County road. A memorial service for Freen will be held tomorrow at 1pm at the First Baptist Church in Lawton.

ARREST MADE

Former Firefighter Accused of Trooper's Murder

Murder charges will be filed against Rick Ray Malone in the shooting of Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Nikky Green.

Malone was arrested Sunday on drug charges. He's a former Duncan firefighter who was fired earlier this year when he was allegedly found with drugs.

Trooper Nikky Green was gunned down last Friday morning on a dirt road north of Devol, Oklahoma.

Green's dash cam shows the suspect, possibly right after he shot Green. And on Monday night authorities found the suspect's white Geo Spectrum in Lawton.

The Cotton County District Attorney Office is expected to charge Malone with murder by next week.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday in Lawton, family and friends gathered to say goodbye to Trooper Nikky Green. More than 2,500 people attended services for green at the First Baptist Church in Lawton, including hundreds of fellow highway patrol troopers and police officers from across the state.
