I just ran across an old AR looks good no frills but the guy is asking $850 It looks like about 600 to 1000 down the pike is there anything I can do to "check it out" other than the obvious?

1000 rounds down the pipe is nothing. If you are worried, have a gunsmith check the rifle with a throat erosion gauge. I seriously doubt your rifle has been fired more than the MANY thousands or rounds needed to cause throat erosion. Shooting lots of frangible rounds can cause faster erosion but few folks outside the military and law enforcement communities shoot frang.

Bought the Colt today and she's a beauty, however I really don't know much about her. Can someone tell me how to ascertain when the gun was built? Is there a way to tell the model, the barrel is stamped h/bar with a 1 in 7 twist....she came with an after market magazine that hold 45 rounds but has no markings.

Here we go on the lower:
Match Target tm Match H/Bar
SN CMH042520

On the Barrel:
5.56 NATO
1/7 HBAR

Heres some Pic's

Hope I got a good deal for under $825!

As always Thanks in advance.

Can I add a pinned flash hider, looks like the front of the barrel is turned down?

Odd. 1-in-7" twist on what you think is an "old" gun? That's a relatively new gun, friend. At the least, it's a relatively new upper. Heck, it's even a small-pin lower. That's not "old". You got a good deal. :)

Slammy dont put a flash suppressor on it. They come that way because it is a target rifle. They are very accurate, I had one for a while that I three way traded for a Colt light weight carbine.

For 850 on a newish Colt, its probably not very old, you got a good price.

Also get rid of that mag.

Thanks to all, I'll take your advice on the flash hider, I have a zillion mag's ( Nice to have a son in the army). I never saw one that holds that many rounds though.

Ok I'm an old blind fart, what do you all think about what kind of optics I should install?

That really gets down to personal opinion...........I'm an old fart too, and the stock peep sights work very well for me.

Colt

CZ, I have to wear contacts to see far away and when I do I have to wear reading glasses for up close. If I take out the contacts I can see great, up close, but can't see a darn thing down range....so any suggestions will be appreciated.

Slammy,

You're really the only one who can judge that, but what works for me is to focus on the front sight (which is clear as a bell) then when I look at the target it's about twice as blurry as it was years ago. That's about the best that I can describe it. I forgot to mention that I set my glasses and reading glasses aside, and just shoot the best I can without them. My wife says that I'm just shooting on the memory of what the target should look like. :D

Time to go watch a Mr. Mc goo cartoon on You Tube.
