I've met a couple forumites here who owned old .22LR "military trainer" rifles, picked up at pawn shops, gun shows, and the like, used, for dirt cheap. Both of them said they were accurate as snot and one of them I got to shoot to find out for myself.

Does anybody have an old no-name .22 that they bought on a whim and absolutely love?

I'd really like a light little .22 bolt gun with decent irons to screw around with. Maybe with my free time and a couple hundred bucks tomorrow I could go make an impulse purchase. :)

The old military trainers are great rifles for the most part and range in price from around $50 to $Very $Expensive. I collected a few of these while they were a little more common. The Springfield M1922MII, Winchester M75, H&R M12, Romanian M69, and a Polish trainer whose outward appearance resembles that of a Mosin Nagant. There are many other trainers out there that I would love to have, but can't afford at this time in my life.

Here's a link to the Polish trainer:

The H&R M12

The Springfield Armory M1922MII

I have a Mossberg 44US (along with a 44B and 144LSB) and a Romanian trainer. All of the Mossies are tack drivers. The Romanian has feeding issues no matter what magazine I use so I normally just fire it as a single shot.

KB,

The CMP has Mossy US44's available again right now, for the first time in 6 years, for $175 each. Adult size stocks, target sights, actual US military history. Great rifles.... tack drivers.

I bought several of them back 8 years ago when they were $75 each. Best money I ever spent. ;) :D

Best regards,
Swampy

Garands forever

Oooh! Thanks for the heads-up on the Mossbergs fellas. A service grade Garand is #2-3 on the list. I'll see about tossing a Mossberg in while I'm at it in a month or so.

the romy's are proly the funnest, cheapest, lightest, with a big thumbs up for the express rear sites. can be had for 100 bucks or less.
if you wanna tackdriver, a old mossy or H/R will deff do the trick.

MRIman : I've got a Romanian trainer that is the best $55 ever spent!!!!

WOW!!! $55? I knew they were inexpensive, but I didn't think that they were that low in price.

Is that price still good? Or was that awhile back now when they first came out?

I got 2 of the Romanian M-69's

I got one at Gander Mtn for $25.00
the other at a pawn shop for $40.00.

I love them they are the poor man's CZ.

Romys it is!

I hunt regular like with mine, and my oldest daughter does too.

I too had feeding troubles, so I ended up shimming the action and the triggerguard/mag well. With a bit more space taken up from what I belived to be storage shrinkage, it all smoothed out and fed fine .
I shimmed with oiled cardboard from a cereal box.

22LR chambers on military trainer rifles:
I should have been more specific.
I was asking if any special attention is given to the chamber dimensions ?
Do any of the military rifles have a match chamber? Or something close to it?
thanks,
