which .22 for lrp/trainer?

i've been looking to set up a .22lr for a sort of trainer for long range precision. this would include shots from 50yds at small targets out to 200yds and possibly further.

i'd like to get a ruger 10/22 at some point but am not sure if this is the right rifle for this application. i had a savage markII and absolutely hated the plastic stock, so sold it, but would consider another with a wood stock. also rather interested in the cz lineup.

any recommendations?

this will be a scoped rifle but i may wish to have aperture sights as an option (tech sights on the 10/22) as i enjoy irons.

the 10/22 seems to have tons of aftermarket support, but how accurate are they out of the box? how is the factory target model with the heavy bbl?

i'm looking for a decent rifle out f the box, just adding a scope, and maybe a trigger. other mods to come later in the game.

If you're looking to get out that far with a factory .22, CZ or Savage is exactly what you need. A stock 10/22 can do it, but not as well. If you upgrade the 10/22 significantly, it'll shoot just as well as the CZ or Savage, though it'll end up costing a lot more.

actually on second thought, i think i'll forgo the idea of aperture sights on this one. i have aperture sights on another .22 for when the urge strikes.

any thoughts on pros/cons in regards to the cz and the savage? i was checking out the mark II bv, and the 455 varmint the cz seems to be about $100 more.

CZ all the way... Not that the Savage or the 10/22 are bad rifles but, for what you want to do, CZ is the best choice for the money IMHO. Check out clane b's post just further down the page. He has done some of the same things you want to do and has some pics of the results. Those are pretty darn good groups for a sporter weight 22LR at 144 yards....

I hope I say this properly and you are able to get my meaning, but I do believe that the CZs are better rifles; however, the Savages are better shooters.

I know that there are always extraordinary examples of firearms showing really good accuracy, but on an average I'd say that the Savages are better out of the box shooters.

For what you want to do, Savage has a lot of models that will work. We've been having pretty good luck with the TR model.

I don't know how much money it is that you want to spend, but what I did was to get a Remington 40X in .22. Many stocks, triggers and mounts to choose from when customizing.

As for the 10/22, you can get them to shoot well. I have one that was a work in progress for about six months and it shoots amazingly well, for a 10/22; but it took at lot of work with the bedding and the parts that I chose to go with weren't cheap either. I have about $600 in mine, not including my time in setting it up. In the end, I don't regret it at all. Mine shoots as well as any CZ or Savage.

Oh, and as long as you're just checking stuff out. Take a look at the Marlins too.

I am having the same dilema and I think as a trainer to my Savage LRP I am going to go with a Savage 17hmr FV.

thanks for the input, fellas. i'm leaning more towards the savage. i liked the one i had before, just hated the stock and i couldn't get it sighted in with the irons. even had savage send me a taller front post and still ran out of adjustment with the ramp before getting it sighted in. anywho, that won't be an issue with this rifle.

i like the mark II tr as well, but kind-of want to steer clear of the tactical style for this one. that's why i like the bv.

does anyone know if the barrel is free-floated in the bv stock?

The barrel should be free-floated, but sometimes it'll be touching a little here or there. Easy fix with a little bit of sandpaper.
