Is anyone familar with the 600 and the safety recall from years back?

I went to the range yesterday to shoot my 600 and was informed by the range officer that my gun was unsafe. He said since it didn't have the "V" stamped into the trigger that the safety recall work had not been done.

I called Remington and they are sending me information on sending the rifle back to the factory for this repair. My customer service rep. wasn't exactly sure about the nature of the problem but knew that Remington would repair it free of charge.

A hunting buddy has a 600 that was his first hunting rifle, and the recall was for the rifle being capable of firing when the safety was released - his never did. He never sent it back to Remington and a few years ago I replaced the factory trigger with a Timney. That solved any potential problems with the safety and is a much nicer trigger too.

Yes there were some hunting accidents that resulted in fatalities. Some of the rifles went off when the safety was moved into firing position without pulling the trigger. Mine never had the problem but I sent it to Remington anyway for peace of mind. This was a few years back and it was a painless experience. A few weeks later I had my rifle back. I did have to pay to have it shipped there.
I love my Mohawk 600. It is one of my best shooting rifles and shoots all kinds of ammo very well.
