I have a friend who needs some money. Actually his wife tells him he needs to sell something before he can buy a new toy, so he just thinks he needs some money.
He has this old shotgun, a Remington model 11, serial #357,xxx. He describes it as being in "great shape", sounds like a solid very good from his description. He has two barrels for it, one with a solid rib and one plain.

The thing is, his grandfather gave it to him. I told him he would likely regret it if he sold it. I also offered to buy it for a fair price, with the agreement that he could buy it back again if he changed his mind. I told him my price might be a little on the low side because I don't really need it and don't have a lot of cash myself, but it would be more than if he just dumped it at the local gun shop (which I would hate to see him do). This would be something I would keep if he decided to not buy it back.

I will definitely look at it before offering him a price as of course all is dependant on condition, was just wondering if anyone had some good ideas as to what to look for, maybe an estimate on age, comments on how good of a gun the old model 11 is, etc.

Thanks for any input. BTW, I personally would never sell something my grandpa gave me. My own grandfather recently gave away his shotgun, to a neighbor.:uhoh: He figured I had plenty, why would I want another old shotgun?:(

A good gun, a simplified Browning Auto 5. Unfortunetly they are undervalued if they are not Higher grade (Bling like inlays, engraving and fancy wood grain) a very clean one with 2 barrells in field grade is prolly worth $350 or so.Pretty much these are pre WW2 guns.

Won't bring the $350 in these parts - perhaps $250 if in good condition with the two barrels would be closer to what they go for here.

These are 2&3/4" chambered guns and pretty heavy for field carry so they are not great sellers. Old ones with heavy usage should be checked by a smith for bolt damage .

Around here, in great shape, $300.

Like the A-5, folks either love or hate these.

Good shotguns.

A new set of springs and rings should set you up for another 10K rounds.

Have a decent smith look it over.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know where I can find out what year it was made from the serial number?

1-800-243-9700 is Remington's number. Call and give them the serial number, they'll date it for you....
