Naturally, after getting my first gun (Sig P226), all I can think about is what my next one will be.

Luckily, one of my friends has a new Remington 870 that he wants to get rid of. He said he was originally thinking of trading it in, but knew that the dealer would rip him off. He said he paid around $350 for it, and has never fired a shell through it. He's a cop and bought it for home security, but since cops are ditching the shotgun and going with the AR-15s he's looking to upgrade.

The only problem is that his email specified the shotgun as a "Remington 870 Security." Does this mean the 870 Home Defense? Is there such a thing these days?

My question is: What would be a fair price to take this shotgun off his hands? If the gun is as new as he says it is, I wouldn't mind paying $300 or so. But then again, he's a friend and I don't want him to leave feeling he's getting ripped off.

They go for #350 brand new on sale @ Turners or Big 5 regularly. I'd say offer him $250 and see what he says. $300 good price not great. If you like it get it. It is a great all around home defense shotgun. You can get one right now on consignment from Turners for $250 check their online gunrack at:

print it out for your friend and see what he says. Turners will transfer it to a store near you.

Unfortunately, where I live, guns tend to cost more than most places. A new 870 Express HD goes between $350 and $375, so a never fired 870 at $300 wouldn't be out of line around here. You can probably contact a couple local shops to see what they charge for a new one for comparison. In your case, you know the previous owner and the condition of the gun, so it's not like your taking a chance on buying someone else's junk as would the case if you were to buy used from a shop. I know many on this board live in places that practically give away used shotguns, but I can tell you, prices vary widely depending on where you live.

I bought a Remington 870 Express - 18"barrel, extended mag tube and NEVER FIRED!!! I can prove that because when I put in the first shell in I scratched the paint on the shell inserter haha. Anyway, I bought it off here from someone in NC and shipped it to my FFL in MA for $225. I have yet to actually fire it.

Price depends on which model it is. If it's the 870HD, you can get it at Big 5 for around $300 before Tax if it's on sale. It went as low as $279 IIRC.

If it's absolutely NIB, I wouldn't mind paying $300 for it if it's a good friend. However, I'd suggest getting yourself a used Police trade in Wingmaster or Police. They can be had for as little as $175 shipped if you look around on Gunbroker. The problem is then that I don't know of any Dealers around LA aside from Ade's in Orange that would give you a "good" price on the transfer fee.

The gun at Turners from the previous post is less valuable because it wouldn't have the extension and you'd also have to go through the trouble of dremeling down the dimples inside the magazine tube.

Thank you all for your advice. I'm meeting up with my friend next weekend, and I'll assess the gun then. If it's what it's cracked up to be, I might offer $300 and split the dealer transfer fees. If not, then I'll go a little lower.

Either way, I'm pretty much committed to adding this shotgun to my collection.

Yeah, either way, I don't think you'd be making a bad choice.

My first gun was a plain jane Express. I ended up dremeling out the dimples, getting an 18" Barrel and sticking on an Extension.

The only thing you'll have to note is that any replacement barrels you'll get should have the little ball detent in the barrel ring. Just look for a Wingmaster/Police style barrel and you'll be fine. The Express barrels have a different ratcheting system and will loosen up on your gun when shooting.

As said,

It depends where you are and more importantly, which model. If he paid $350 for it and you know the gun and him and it IS NIB, then $300 depending on the model, is a fair price around here, and if he is a friend, then what's $25-$50 anyway. If he is more of an aquantience, then offer him $200 and go from there.
