My dad had a .22 rifle, a Springfield, IIRC, that I would like to see a picture of, and read up on. It was semi-auto, but the bolt knob could be pushed in preventing it from recoiling, making it a single shot..... it had a tube magazine. The bolt could be removed by unscrewing a cap on the back of the reciever. The left side of the reciever had a vent-like deal opposite the ejection port on the right side.

Anybody recognize the model? Do you have any pics?

Savage made a similar 22, Model 6A, real neat guns. Story goes, my dad, a long time ago, when he was a youngun, was being chased by a cow, cuttin through the cow field and all, Broke off the front sight, the 6A, on that cow's head. Did'nt know if I wanted to replace that sight or not, dad being gone and all. But I did, shoots real fine.

That semi-auto .22 was made by Savage under the Savage, Stevens, and Springfield names with several different model numbers, and with both box and tubular magazines. IMHO, it was probably the absolutely worst .22 semi-auto ever put on the market, but it survived for many years.

If the gun works, fine, enjoy. If it doesn't, I wouldn't bother to try fixing it - that road leads to insanity.

The 87A looks like it might be it.

We liked it, and it ran well, until we started shooting "Stingers" through it. The bolt handle that went through the bolt broke ....
