I'm trying to find out just what vintage/type this scope is:

for a 22 rifle
Rubber eye piece
on the mount near the adjustment it reads.

"J.C. Higgins"
4X
Patd
manf by W.R. Weaver Co
El Paso, Tex USA

it's got fine crosshairs and it all steel.

Anyone know if it's a "B4, D4, V4" from Weaver?

It won't be a V4 because the V meant variable, but your scope probably predates the B4, D4 types.

There's no model number on the adjustment pad near the screw or cap that leads to a screw? So it's just a scope made for Sears by Weaver.
