Found an older shotgun of my grandfathers. It is a Winchester model 12 16ga. The serial number starts with 1677. Any information would be appreciated.

Winchester Model 12

I too have a model 12 and it's a fine SG. The only issue I have with it is that it's so darn difficult to break down as in remove the magazine & barrel.

I'm also looking to buy a trench (short) barrel for it but haven't had much luck. Actually I have not really been doing a lot of searching so we get what we invest I guess.

Model 12 barrels do not come off in the conventional sense like a 870 Rem or something.

They come apart in the middle in about 10 seconds for cleaning or packing in a suitcase.

Actual barrel changes require a complete fitted forward half of the gun, to include the fitted headspace ring, barrel extension, magazine tube, and forearm wood.

In short, you don't "change" a model 12 barrel on a whim when you go to the range unless you have a fitted front section of another gun to change it with.

It is not an issue.
It is a design feature of the Model 12.

If you want quick-change barrels, you probably want an 870 or Mossy 500.
