I have a friend that has a Stevens 25-20 single shot rifle. We are looking into reloading for it. There is not a lot of info about this particular CAL and it has been said a couple of places that the 25-20 Winchester ammo will not work in it. Is brass available or able to be formed from another CAL brass? Are dies available or are they the same as the Winchester ones. I am putting this in rifles instead of reloading for now, any general info would be a help. Anyone out there that has one of these rifles? It does not look like a Stevens Favorite model however.

.25-20 Single Shot is a long, nearly straight case with NOTHING in common with .25 WCF except bullet diameter.

A chamber cast or an attempt to chamber a .25 WCF would pay off.
Somebody might have had the barrel set back and rechambered when .25-20 SS ammo and components dried up. But not real likely, the smart money is on .25-20 SS.

A Stevens in .25-20 is probably a Model 44 or 44 1/2.
Even though "only a half apart" and similar in appearance, they do not operate the same and a Model 44 is not nearly as strong as a 44 1/2.

Thanks for the good info guys. I figured someone here would know the answer.:D It is indeed a 44 1/2 model. Wondered what the 441/2 stamped on the barrel was for. Looking down the barrel from the breach it does not appear to have a step in the chamber area. I think that I will see if I can purchase a couple pieces of brass and see if it fits. I think that it has set in a closet for years due to not having any ammo available.
