I bought a Ruger Security Six at Gun Show about 4 years ago for $185. It is a beauty. Wrote to Ruger and they told me it was a 1984. Have never seen one for that price since. Last one I saw was $299. Good luck.

You can't go wrong with a Ruger. I don't know what it's like for the rest of ya'll, but around here used Rugers and Taurus (Tauri?) are the cheapest of the big name guns. Once in a while you'll find a used S&W that isn't way overpriced, but cheap ones are getting rarer and rarer. Since Rugers are built like tanks, I'd say they are the best deal.

When I see Ruger Security/Service Sixes around here it's a $350-400 dollar proposal. Smith and Wesson K frames are $250-350.

I picked up a LNIB GP100 blued 6" for $365 a month ago. Same gun in stainless would be at least another 100 bucks.

There's a boatload of Smith and Wesson K frame police trade-ins out there.

I'd recommend, as a few others have, at looking at picking up a police trade-in model 65 or 66 S&W. That and check out your local pawn shops, but make sure that you study this first: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=1430

I regularly see model 66 K-frames go for under $300; as a matter of fact, I recently picked up a pristine 66-no number stainless for $200-one of those cannot pass up deals.
