the .270 is a great choice; you can get softpoint loads, ballistic tip loads, bonded loads, and even a flat nosed load from Federal which can be like having a blunt tip .30-30, just lighter and a bit smaller in diameter; very versatile caliber with lots to offer; I would like to have a .270 myself, but I have a .25-06 with way too much ammo and reloading components to make a change at this time;

man thats like asking which kid do i love more...

Aside from the family rifles i own from my father, grandfather, double great grandfather and great uncle, if i HAD to have one ? probly my 1971 vintage rem 700 ADL in .308
geez tough question

I'm thinking of paring down my (large game) hunting rifle collection to just one. I would like opinions, if you don't mind, as to which I should keep.

My hands down favorite is a Ruger M77 .270. I live in the southeastern mountains, don't hunt bear and wonder if I will need anything larger.
hmmn , very difficult question .. as a .270 is a fairly longer range rifle, & you state you live in the mountains , i'd go with the 'standard .308 , due to vast choices of heads etc; .
my very first choice would be my pre '64 winchester 70 in 30.06 though .. my .02 ( lol )

Article in America's First Freedom (NRA) magazine today - Ted Nugent interview - his favorite hunting rifle is a GA Precision in .270 Win. He says that GA stands for "gnat assassin" because that's what you can do with it.

Man I love Uncle Ted (and the .270). :)

The one rifle I'd have to keep would be my .257 Roberts...Love that rifle, and wouldn't hesitate to use it on anything up to and including elk.
