I didn't watch the videos (at home on a slow connection atm) but cops get a bad rap on gun handling due to the views that some people (cops or not) have regarding cops or other "professionals" in regards to guns.

Most cops I know are also people. They make mistakes. I even know a few that are idiots-- just like I know a few insurance agents that are idiots, and a few mechanics that are idiots, etc. ect. etc.

I don't like elitism among LEOs who every likely have had less "trigger time" than a great number of us. I don't like elitism amoung "experts" who got into shooting a couple years ago who then proceed to lecture others who have had guns in their hand practically since birth (you know who you are).

But I REALLY don't like those that make this position as a means of rationalizing their position on gun ownership who likely are neither a gun owner nor a LEO. THOSE are the persons that do the most harm to LEOs. I think a LOT of LEOs just wish they'd shut up.

The hard-core "gun grabbers" would just turn that around and say, "Well, if police are that irresponsible, then ordinary citizens must be even more irresponsible.

ding....ding....ding.... we have a winner-- someone that TRULY understands the mentality of the gun-grabbers.

On these big issues I really am pretty much uninformed. I am certain of one thing. I am armed, I know how to use my weapon, and if confronted by one who wishes to do harm to myself or my loved ones, I will use it appropriately.

As far as the big global issues concerning the RKBA, I really don't have much of an opinion. I know that people have a darkness which I don't want focused on me.

Correct.

It is a mistake anyway to believe that the anti-RKBA people are really pro-cop anyway.

Although the gun-grabbers are currently allied with some law enforcement organizations - particularly big city police chiefs who think they can strengthen their own political position by getting in bed with the gun grabbers - in the long run, the anti gun agenda is to disarm the police as well. In gun-free fantasy land, the bad guys won't have guns, so the cops won't need them.

It astounds me that some police actually believe the antis are their friends. You are next on the list, officer Gungrab.

I do recognize their are many police officers who understand and support RKBA for all law abiding citizens. These are not the ones I have a beef with.

Excellent point. The gun grabbers are fond of saying something like "trained law enforcement only has a 40% hit rate (I forget the actual statistic) when using force under stress. If they're that low, just imagine how incompetent ordinary citizens would be with their hit rate. Clearly only law enforcement should have guns".

They completely ignore the fact that many civilians train more freqently than some law enforcement, so the conclusion drawn on hit rates is completely erroneous. Of course, it serves to promote their agenda which is why they have no problem ignoring the facts.

Just for the record, the last Survey in Polcie Magazine had approx 87% of the people surveyed (All sworn Officers) agreeing that Gun Control Doesnt work, and Civilians (Or is that anaughty word HERE too?) should have unlimited CCW. We are drawn from the population..jst like every OTHER profession. We have our good people and we have our Nitwits. Considering I've been shooting for much LONGER than I've been a cop, and having seen some MONUMENTAL screwups by Non LEO's, as well as Military, should I tar all of YOU with that same Brush?? or can we be intellectually honest enough to admit that one Dipstick doesnt' necessarily reflect on the entire Population.

If you wish to use those examples as a debating point with a "hard-core" type with the intention of changing his/her mind, my advice is not to. Debates are only for people with reasonably open minds, and for the "fence-sitters," so to speak, to help make a decision.

Most cops I know are also people.

Most???

Ok.... so, if most is defined as "greatest in number" then this implies that there are a small number of cops who are not people........... I have to know: what are they?!

I have an idea..... mind you it's just speculation.

Who laughs about hurting another human being let alone a woman citizen???? I don't trust anyone who gets a job so they can carry a gun and hurt people. Not that all poice are like this of course, but everyone that is found behaving like this should be fired. I have "defused" numerous crazy confrontations without the use of force or a weopon so why can't cops that supposedly have training do this without bring out a gun?

Another truly pointless thread.

For those that delight in spotlighting bad cop w/gun story lines, be advised that you are not advancing the RKBA cause in the slightest; to the contrary, only a lot of bad things can result (and I'm not talking about the hurt feelings and those who take the cop-bashing threads personally).

Finally, for every stupid cop w/gun story you can dig up, we can probably find 1000 stupid citizen w/gun stories. Again, what's the point? This does not do anything to contribute to THR's mission statement.

Bad Cops

Gee, I wonder why we never see good cops in action?Could it be because there are no real Cop supporters, only Cop haters out on the prowl for a real juicy video showing a Cop hurting someone?
I hardly ever had anyone comment good job officer while I was rolling around the ground trying to make an arrest, but I had many yell to me "Leave the poor guy alone" having no knowledge what had happened before they came on the scene.
For all the folks out there that made my 32 years of service a living hell I say"Thanks for nothing".For all the folks out there that supported my efforts.I say"Thanks for the pension".

5 minutes worth of searching on youtube would result in countless videos of irresponsible gun owners.

So my question is, what purpose are you serving by encouraging that we share videos of improper gun handling.

How many times has the "DEA agent shooting himself with a glock 40" video changed the opinion of an anti gunner?

I agree.

Being a cop is a job that involves a lot more than using a firearm. In fact most situations do not call for a firearm. A large number of them are not gun people, and only have one because they are issued it.
Someone not very into firearms, required to carry it casualy every day, taking it on and off, loading and unloading is more likely to have an accident in the same time period than someone who takes them seriously and has enjoyed them responsibly in hobbies on thier own time following safety rules.

So officers are going to have a higher number of firearm related accidents than most samples of the general public. That does not necessarily mean they are more dangerous, there is many people that would be more dangerous, but they are not required to carry a firearm.

They are more likely to have an accident with them than the average firearm hobbyist.
So the number of hours and number of armed individuals carrying a firearm who only do so as a part of thier job is bound to eventualy catch up with them. It is not like most actualy use firearms often, whether practicing plinking/ target shooting, hunting or shootings. They just carry it on a belt. So they are not really excercising and reinforcing positive responsible use often.
They also routinely break the 4 rules as part of thier occupation. Many individuals they don't wish to destroy, and who are not necessarily a danger, but MAY be a danger are approached or held at gunpoint.

So many factors add up to actualy make them as a whole more inclined to accidents with firearms.

Here is another bad video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n2VLmqCXL0
The suspect handcuffed on the ground almost dies, and has the top of his head (likely where she was aiming) right next to the point of impact. It also just misses her partner on the suspect.
I wonder if he would have been "reaching for something" had he died.

There is a lot to learn from improper handling, and I am sure officers will highlight many mistakes to help reinforce the need for safety to other officers.
We are all just people. Police try to weed out some of the less responsible people in the hiring process. That helps, but they are also not necessarily firearm enthusiasts either. They are a wide range of people from different backgrounds, and carrying and handling, unloading and loading something they are not that familiar with day after day leaves more time for error.

I think the OPs point is valid, they are not better that everyone else with firearms. They are simply people, and anyone who says they are safer with firearms than other citizens usualy has an agenda. That agenda is usualy gun control.
