So I have my very first Ontario knife coming which will be here Sat. probably. I got the Ontario Ranger Shiv knife with black micarta handles, 4 1/2" plain edge blade.

Does anyone have an experince with this model? This is going to be my beat around and use knife.

I posted a thread asking for pics of fixed blades that owners actually used. At that time I had a Kabar #1012 on the way that I got off Ebay with the intent of it being a heavy use knife.

Well the Kabar arrived and it was in brand new condition. Original edge, not a mark on it or the sheath and it has been out of production for over 35 yrs. Being out of production and almost new I can't bring myself to use it so I gave it to my daughter.

I won't have any problems using this Ontario Ranger as them seem to be popular and are in current production. I know Ontario used different steels on various models. This one is 1095. I like the blade shape and length of 4 1/2"s.

So any opinions on this model? Anything I need to watch out for? I know the blade finish will wear and scratch, but it is going to come off by use not because I don't like the finish. thanks

There's not a lot of protection, so make sure you don't contact the blade with something firm or hard in a way that will abruptly slow the knife, while your hand continues on...to slide onto the blade.

Thank you for your reply. I did notice what you mentioned. The knife should be delivered today. From what I can tell looking at it this is a fairly easy fix. It is a pretty straight forward knife and the handles easily come off so It is easy to work with. thanks again

You won't have to worry much about your hand sliding on that handle, but when you have to stab at stuff, make sure your thumb is behind the pommel.

I can see that with an ice pick grip. But a thrusting motion there isn't much there to keep the hand from sliding up the blade. Otherwise a beautiful knife. size and blade design are just what I wanted.
