How many Marines here?

Since I was 17 years old in 1955.:)

And to keep this firearms related, this was my issue M1. A brand new International Harvester.
At the time I thought it was strange, a rifle made by a tractor company, but it was a beautiful shooting rifle. It shot Expert for me (500 yards).:)

Twenty years on active duty and still with the Corps as a Gov Contractor! My first issue weapon was a M16-A1 was happy as a pig in $#!^ when we got the A2's. Hated to lose the .45's for that peice of dung berretta though...

The year before we got married (so... `03-ish), my wife was in the process of joining the Corps; Signed just about all the papers, sent her university transcripts off to wherever they go (she had a BA had a great GPA, and was being woo'ed for OCS (speaking Hebrew was also something they liked)), completed the physicals, and (according to her recruiter) scored the highest on her battery test that he'd seen in twelve years (IIRC, she got as high ascore as you can.)

Sadly, well sorta, when we invaded Iraq USMC recruitment sky rocketed (or so they told her) and ther bad shoulder (years of intense judo) that the first medical examiner had said would be "okay" became a "disqualifing medical condition" during her second round of physicals.

Long run, it worked out okay. She didn't get sent to the sandbox, and we have a beautiful 10.5 mo. old daughter. :)

Downside, I coulda been married to a Marine Corps officer; Tell me that wouldn't have been a turn on?

Wow, that was off topic....

Fella's;

(W.C. Fieldsian voice) Ahh yess, the eternal debate! Does the navy only exist to drive them about, or are they really the navy's sea-going bellhops?

Both parents were WWII USMC vets. Dad went into Guadalcanal with the 1st, mom was at Cherry Point. When dad rotated out of the theater, right around Vella LaVella, he was sent to Cherry Point.

Having been 'in the corps' as it were for 18 years, I decided to do something different & joined the U.S. Army in 1965. Relations became strained, boot camp was a breeze - B13 Ft. Lost in da woods Oct-Dec 1965. Things happened. Got out in 1968.

Thain,
looks like you're one of the rare few lucky men who never need to dream about Lara Croft :)

Lara who?

Judo brown belt under one of the best sensei's in the States, semi-fluent in a foreign tounge, a scholar, a lawyer (soon to be, anyway), a crack shot with her shotgun, Tolkein enthusast, Jeep driving, excellent cook, great mommy, Dead-Head, and she laughs at my jokes.

No. I have no idea why I'm so lucky.

And she laughs at your jokes. It dont get no better than that. after 24 years of being a lawyer if you need any lawyer jokes just let me know.

MCRD, San Diego, 1963.

2nd MAW, Cherry Point, NC, 1964.

Camp Hansen, Okinawa staging for Vietnam, 1965.

Chu Lai, Vietnam with 1st EngBtn, 1st MarDiv (Rein), FMF, 1966. (I was in communications, HQ Company.)

Got slapped with a 90 day involuntary extension (sound familiar?). Took a battery of tests and qualified for flight school. Since I was at the end of my enlistment they, of course, wanted me to ship over (re-enlist for non-Marine and Navy folks). I told them I would if I passed the flight physical and was recommended for flight school. They said it was possible IF I shipped over first. No way, says I, and applied for a college cut instead. I would have stayed if they would have only given me that physical.

Lot of water under the bridge since then...a lot of water.

SEMPER FI!

When I was 17, I went to visit a Marine recruiter. He told me to take my hands out of my pockets and count to 11. No problem, I aced that part. Then he asked me if I knew the real name of my real father. I answered him with conviction, the real name of my real father. He got a disgusted look on his face and told me that I was not Marine material, He recommended that I join the air farce.

I had to settle for second best, the 82d Airborne Div at Fort Bragg, NC.
