I'm in Florida and while we don't have Open Carry, more and more Floridians are starting to come around to the idea. It may be another ten or twenty years but it's still fun to think about.

There are number of guns I'd like to make that one on my hip when I'm out in public, granted I'll still keep my concealed permit so I can keep a snubby .357 in my pocket but there are a lot of guns to ponder on.

There's the 1911 .45 ACP, now while the standard 7+1 carry is certainly a beautiful piece of effective and reliable technology...I'm a Magnum Dweeb, I love controlling those .357 and 44 Magnum hand cannons like they're nothing but tame kittens I can double tap inside a playing card at fifteen yards. Trouble is .44 Magnums might be a bit of overkill given their habit of being good deer killers nad firing one off in a public setting even in a good shoot might still lead to innocent bystanders getting hurt, unless the math for .357s being loaded low grain and high velocity equals incredible stopping power with little over-penetration, then maybe I could reliably consider it. Yeah I could shoot .44 spcl out of the .44 Magnum but... I'm of the understanding(perhaps mistaken) that they don't really out peform the .45 ACP unless in Corbon loads and other such hot loads.

Now onto .357s, there's the six-shooter, but with the S&W 627 and Taurus 608 eight shots, a model in a six inch or four inch barrel would be quite nice. I'm sorry but 9mm's and .40s just don't come into the equation. Now granted there's the Sigs but I can't find a love for them and having fired a friend of mine's 220 a half-dozen times I can't get into them.

Now there are Glocks and the .45s but I just don't care for a .45 in a Glock, feels almost unnatural in some strange sense I can't explain. Now the 10mm, somehow seems almost natural and I've shot some of the hotter loads out of the Glock 20 and fell in love with it. If I could get a 6" slide and 6" barrel, that'd be some good cooking in the performance department...just something to ponder.

Granted I could just slap a Ruger Black Hawk on my hip and get the effect I want, being a proud patriot not afraid to be a patron of the 2nd Amendment. One of my pet fears is worrying about some hood, wanna-be-thug fool trying to grab off my hip. I realize you have to be situationally aware but from experience I had one run up and try to grab my car keys out of my hands as I was looking for the key in the dark night, he caught a surprise when all 250 pounds of me stuffed into 5'9" with a 40" chest and 26" biceps was right behind him grabbing ahold of him and "politely" asking for my keys back. I'd always carry a concealed piece so long as the law allows and since this is Florida where the concealed carry revival movement was in part started, I'd guess I then have to make that my primary protector then. A .44 Magnum SA on the hip and a snubby .357 in the pocket, not too shabby I'd think but for now it's all in harmless pointless grinning fun.

Here in VA I normally OC my XD45 5" but before I got it I had been OCing my mod. 64 Smith.

If I were a big fan of open carry (which I'm actually not) and tended to look upon the gun I wore as kind of a fashion accessory, I'd probably pick one that I thought looked good and that I had dressed up some -- like one of the following:

If I was most concerned about having my most effective weapon, a gun that I shot well and that was absolutely reliable, I'd probably pick one of the following:

I live in Florida, too, and, while it is more of a "pro-2A" state than many others, I really don't think you're gonna have to make that choice anytime soon. When it finally does come up, who knows what "trusty blaster" you'll have available?

no CWC, but open carry here. 6'' 686 witha Bianchi #10 holster. Same setup I use when I hunt with it.

Colt SAA .45 LC!

If you're gonna go Cowboy and open-carry, best to have the right gun!

It seems like all the old cowboys (the authentic ones, not the reenactors) I see open carrying are packing well worn Colt 1911s.

makes sense considering the 1911 was intended and designed to be a replacement for the SAA's the army was using at the time, and they wanted the ACP to match the effectiveness of the .45colt of the time :)

Why would your open carry gun be different from your concealed carry piece?

Admittedly, concealed carry does place certain restrictions on the gun -- but guns like the M1911 carry concealed very nicely.

IMHO carrying 4-6" barrel .38 revolvers would look the best.

....don´t put something on your hip, that looks bigger than your penis,
it will distract the target-audience too much. :)

Same thing I carry concealed for the most part. Either a G-19, or a Colt Commander.

Although at times I'll go with a 22 of one kind or another (usually a Bearcat), but that's usually just for knocking around here in the country.

Nope, open carrying that gun is actually illegal. :p

An experiment: Dive to your local downtown or major commercial district, naked. Exit vehicle. Proceed to window shop, in the same manner as if you were clothed. Don't do anything silly or out of the ordinary aside from being naked. Carry a stopwatch to time how long it takes to get arrested.

I can just picture some people exploiting the double entendre by going out naked with a belt and 1911, carrying signs that say "Support Open Carry!".

Why would your open carry gun be different from your concealed carry piece?

For me I dont carry a "full size" when I am CCW. I prefer some sort of compact 9mm or 38 snub, or even a 32 auto. If I had the option of open carry id definently go for a full size hi cap 9mm or 45.

I think you'll find that the activities of daily life will militate what size gun you carry, not the need to conceal it. For example, a long-barreled gun is a nuisance if you drive or sit a lot. A heavy gun is a burden, whether it must be concealed or not.

So I would suspect if most of us were to start carrying openly, we'd tend to gravitate to the same gun we carried concealed.

If it were legal to open carry anywhere (and I were so moved- I'm not sold on the concept), I would either use my 1911 (I do carry it concealed) or my Smith 327 TRR8 (N frames are hard to conceal, especially with 5" barrels). The revolver would not likely draw as much attention, since some folks tend to balk at C&L guns (but then again, those same people would balk at any visible gun).

It's being considered in Texas and like many others, I'm not sure I like the idea. So far, I've resisted aquaintances who are circulating petitions to urge the legislature to OK the practice. If allowed, however, and I went for the idea, my sidearm would be a full sized Government Model 70 Colt (.45 ACP of course) or my CZ 100 9mm. My rational? That's what I choose to carry when the Texas weather allows, when I consider myself fully armed. Other times, I go with an S&W pre-lock Model 36 or a Beretta New Puma .32, neither totally satisfactory weapons. I wouldn't tote either openly.

I'm not interested in open carry, but if I was, I'd probably carry a Springfield XD45 (5" Tactical model).

Well, I certainly hope you will have the option one day. I haven't open carried yet (legal in NC), but I am STRONGLY tempted to do so. Honestly, the thing that intrigues me most about open carry is the opportunity to be a good will ambassador for RKBA to those that are "sitting on the fence". Dress business casual and go about your business. OC can be about challenging negative stereotypes people have about us "gun nuts". Can't do that carrying concealed. Not sure I am going to change any antis' minds, but its worth a shot.

I'm not saying OC is for everyone, but I can certainly understand why people choose to do it.

One of my pet fears is worrying about some hood, wanna-be-thug fool trying to grab off my hip.

That's why, IMHO, a retention holster of some type for OC is a must. I read a story over on opencarry.org about someone whose immature "friend" grabbed his gun out of his holter, in public, and began playing around with it :what: .

As for the gun itself, carry whatever the heck you want :D ;) ! I would probably alternate between my 4" 686+ and my 1911 g'ment model.
