Opening "Spam" cans of Russian ammo

If it doesn't come with a key (some do, some don't), I've just chiseled the top off. Takes a little longer, but not much. I'm careful not to whack any ammo with my implements.

One of those side ways can openers? I don't realy know I have never seen a spam can of ammo. When I buy cases they either come in a cardoard box , or a wooden crate.

If you aren't careful with that can opener you will do yourself serious damage. Multiple stitches required. Don't ask how I found out.

1) Drink one bottle of vodka

2) Play "Swan Lake" by Pytor Iilich Tchaichovsky at full volume.

3) Recite three times "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs."

Then rip open the can with both hands. :neener:

I've had no problems with the spam can openers that come with the can. If you didn't get one then a chisel or even a dremel would work. Just be careful to not damage the rounds. Next time you get ammo this way, just ask for the opener. Most sellers will give them to you.

Sounds like a plan to me. ;-)

Spam Can Ammo - the real reason the cold war lasted so long, commies couldn't get to thier ammo to start a real war, Eventually they just gave up. ;)

Would the good 'ol P-38 work? Not the plane, not the pistol, the stamped metal can opener that GI's were issued?

What about an electric can opener?

I'm sure a dremel would work, but be careful you don't dremel the ammo.

If it doesn't come with the can opener, use a hammer and chisel and carefully cut around the inside of the lip of the can.

A P-38 or regular can opener won't work.

That's what a bayonet is for , in both the american and russian armies.

The first one of those I ever bought didn't come with a can opener. So I used a chisel and hammer.
After that I have bought many and always got the can opener. And I used a hammer and chisel.

I have not tried this myself but I understand that many people have good luck using a handheld grinder or disk sander to grind down the top edge of the can just far enough that the lid is separated from the can.
