Opening surplus ammo can...

Mine's the third on from the left, with the black writing on the surface of the tin and the round thingees.

The "can opener" that you sometimes get with these is next to useless. Frankly, I use a very large straight blade screwdriver and a mallet. Angle the screwdriver blade outward to miss the ammo. Tap it to start a hole. Tap the blade, starting at the hole, all the way around and "unzip" the lid.

A better solution would be throwing it in the trash. What do you really need sniper ammo for??

Jamal -- I read your other posts. If you don't want to be treated as a troll, don't act like one.

Looks to me like you stand on it and pull on those rings to zip it open. I would stick somthing solid thru the ring to use as a T handle and try ripping it open.

Geez I was thinking of getting a few "SPAM" cans of ammo... But if they are that hard to open...

I haven't got a clue how to open your spam can, but here's a couple of guys playing with thermite.

"It's been specially chosen to be destroyed because it's old, it's white, but most importantly, because it's French."

Oh, man, I want to party with those guys! How come I never have that kind of fun???

:D :D :D

Serious help (all joking aside):

Grab one ring with a pliers (needle nose works best for me) and start rolling the strap that is attached to the ring up with the pliers acting as an axle to provide the leverage to tear away the solder (not welded) joint.

Once you get it started it will get easier and voila! :D

Can we vote on the funniest reply now?

Please. :D

You folks are killing me.

Am I the only thinking there is going to be a run on members buying cans of Spam, and trying the various ways mentioned above to open it, without using the pull tab?

I'm waiting to hear how the member explains to the wife the "boom" from the oven from tossing it in, and the member posting "it was a pretty neat light show, before the microwave went ballistic and exploded Spam all over the kitchen".

I know one of you has to have a "spam gun" of some sort in their collection...

Yea about that... :uhoh: well.. *looks over shoulder at the remains of his GE microwave* Lets just leave it at this, Never ever put Thermite and tinfoil in the microwave at the same time. :what:

Never ever put Thermite and tinfoil in the microwave at the same time.
Put a yellow jacket nest in some clear tupperware and then in the microwave.....ok so it was a really small nest but it was still kinda cool.

Another non-explosive way that would probably work- if the pull tabs are too aggravating- came to me while reading the part about a drill and tin snips... a hacksaw could be used, but very carefully along each side because you don't want to saw into your ammo.

But I'd try the pull tabs first. They probably work like an old-fashioned sardine can like when I was a kid... those had that key that rolled the lid up in a scroll.

I can't believe this has been mentioned yet.

Take a large tube of water and soak the can (water level should be about 2 inches above the top of the can). In a few years, it'll dissolve, leaving the ammo right there in the tub. Viola!

*** WARNING *** - This method takes a little patience... :neener:

Okay, I used the pliers to roll one of the tabs and it worked. Peeled the strip off just like that... on one side. Unfortunately on the other two sides the tabs just broke off when I started peeling them back. :banghead:

However, I was able to roll back the lid its self with two pair of pliers and get at the precious, precious ammo. :D Only took me 10 minutes from start to finish.

All is well.

Thanks, everyone, for the advice and the amusing replies. :p

...er, so you agree with Jamal, Sorgens?

Incidently, this type of ammo isn't "sniper" ammo... it's actually just a basic cartridge for Russian bolt-action infantry rifles from the WWII era. :) Sure, some of these rifles were scoped and used as sniper rifles, but the vast majority were just common rifles.

In other words, this particular ammo is no more "evil" than any other .30 calibre-type cartridge out there.

From the post counts, I wonder if Jamal and Sorgens Kammer are the same guy.:scrutiny: A troll by another name is still a troll. If these one or two are in fact trolls.

While I haven't seen anything to warrant issuing an assault wheelbarrow alert, I do smell a possible anti-gunner given their propensity for claiming one weapon or ammo is too crappy to be allowed and another is too accurate or lethal to be allowed, thus attempting to outlaw everything.
