Bob's correct. It is often more expensive to buy a standard product in the country of manufacture than import them into the U.S. so check your prices.

Correct, most European countries have a VAT (value added tax) of close to 25%. It was always cheaper to buy a Volvo in the US than in Sweden, even with transportation costs and import tariffs.

Speedo.... please, please keep wooden handled knives out of your dishwasher.... Wood and dishwashers don't play well together (now if I could just convince my wife of that....).

Thanks, that's the info I needed. Been a while (decades) since I've had wooden handled kitchen knives. I'll just look around for more Victorinox, used to find them for a few bucks at gun shows, but haven't seen any in like forever.

Edit: After finding out about their useless lifetime warranty which costs more than the knife itself, I'll be looking for other than Victorinox.

Opinel's folding saw is one of the best ever made. I keep them in various kits for the car, truck and pack.

opinel paring knives are very good too!
they have ones in carbon and inox steel, both are good.

I cut up my lunch yesterday with my clean carbon Opinel 8. I wiped the blade with my napkin and washed it when I got home, but it was already showing "patina". I feel like I am really getting With It.
I'm also a great fan of Opinels especially the Carbon steel series.
I usually treat a new one with yellow mustard to get the patina effect.
First, wipe the blade with Acetone or Alcohol to remove existing oils.
Then apply mustard, let it set for 10 minutes, rinse with hot water and repeat till desired effect is reached.

I'll second that! My folks have ruined a set of Chicago Cutlery kitchen knives that way. Mom kept chunking them in the washer until all those black walnut scales looked like driftwood. The handle on the steel looks like new, because she's never cleaned it. Guess I have another project ahead of me.

In my indecisiveness, I have decided to buy one synthetic-handles INOX, and a cherry Carbone. One will be a #6, the other a #8, and I don't care which is which. It's time to quit dithering.

Jim, another option is to take an Opinel No.12 Explore and cut the handle right in front of that belt cutting hook/strange looking tool.

P.S. I just saw the price tag for this knife - $49... o_O
