I'm looking at optics for a Springfield M1A Scout Squad, forward mounted.

The Aimpoint CompC3 in the 2x zoom version, (either 1 or 2 MOA dot not sure yet) seems to be a good candidate. I have never used Aimpoint but I know the reputation is good.

Anybody have any experiance with this optic? Will the 2x zoom be hard to use with long eye relief? Is the 1 MOA dot too small to pick up quickly? The 2x seems optimal for a small .308 guns sight.

The other option I have looked into is a Trijicon reflex sight with the 12.5 MOA triangle. Any feedback on these sights? Cost is about the same for both, $400.

Thanks!

ive got that model on my SW/PC 357MAG TRR8. its a GREAT red dot and for the price they sell it for at midwayusa.com you cant beat it. make sure you get the 2MOA model because the 4MOA will eclipse your target at a few hundred yards. best part about that aimpoint model, you can leave that thing on for years and it wont kill the battery. as for eye releif, thats an irrelevant topic when dealing with this kind of red-dot, and youre only looking at a 2x magnifaction, so its perfect for a scout style rifle. go for it

C3 is the best price/performance model from Aimpoint.

The only thing you lose with the C3 is the ability to go scuba diving with it.

Other than that, it is the same. 99.99% of people will be completely served by it. Navy Seals won't.

Good to hear. It comes in 1 and 2 MOA with the 2x power, so any thoughts on what would be better? I would think 1 is obviously better for accuracy but is it too small to pick up easily?

eh, thats something you may have to decide on your own. keep in mind that with a 1MOA dot you may lose it on a bright day, and i am 99% sure that model doesn't have the option for a shade lens (honeycomb looking thing that screws into the objective lens housing). i would personally go for the 2MOA if youre only looking at smacking 9 inch plates at 300 or so yards

Technically, the dot size won't affect accuracy-- it really just depends on your preference. In my experience, if you can't see the dot well enough, there's plenty of brightness adjustment so you just turn it up. That being said, even 2 MOA dot is pretty darned small (imagine looking at a 2 inch dot at 100 yards, if you can. to most people, it's an infinitesimal point). We have a few of the C3 2x sights in stock here. With the 2x mounted forward, you do in fact lose some FOV. However, when used with the two-eyes-open method for a magnified sight (BAC) the FOV of the optic is not an issue. The larger objective on the 2x models will require a taller sight axis. The sight comes with the proper ring. The CompC3 2x is now discontinued by Aimpoint, but they're still in stock, and they still have other 2x models in the '08 catalog.

I have a CompC3 on my SOCOM. It's 2moa and 1x.

Do not order from SWFA. They lie about the extra Picatinny ring and do not respond to emails. Thieves!!!:cuss:

Just order it from MidwayUSA, and use an Ultimak from bhigear.com.

Ask me more questions.:)

I was thinking 1 MOA because that is what I have used with an EOTech and it seems to be usable and I plan on using the range of the .308 to my advantage. I might go with 2 MOA and 1X in the intrest of compactness and a full FOV however. The mount comes with the gun, so no need for an Ultimak, although I have one on my M1 Carbine, good stuff.

Thanks for the help.

i am aware this is 'rifle country' but here is my C3 on my girl 'Maggie'. this is with the LOW ring (i bought seperate). if it werent for the middle indent on the picatinny rail it would need a higher ring, so keep that in mind when getting a mount. for some nice reliable ones, check out http://www.gggaz.com

The Aimpoint Comp M2 is great, don't know about the C3 but I have never heard anybody say anything bad about Aimpoint (other than cost)
